Old images shared as recent clashes in Kashmir Valley between protesters, security forces

On June 5, 2019, reports emerged that clashes between security forces and protesters took place in some parts of Kashmir. Now, a set of images has been shared by a Facebook page, Indian Army, with the claim that they represent the recent clashes. The caption posted along with the images reads, “श्रीनगर में ईद की नमाज के बाद सेना पर पत्थर बाजी जारी, क्या इनको देखते ही ठोक देना चाहिये,??? (After the namaz on Eid in Srinagar, the army was pelted with stones. Should these people be shot on sight -translated)”.

A few more pages and other individuals on Facebook shared the images with the same narrative.

Fact-check

By reverse searching individual images on Google, Alt News found that they are relatively old but do pertain to stone-pelting incidents in the Kashmir Valley. It may be reiterated here that clashes had erupted between security forces and protesters on June 5, 2019, and were indeed reported but these images are unrelated to the incident.

This image was found on Reuters and was shot by a photographer named Danish Ismail on January 15, 2016, during a protest in Srinagar. Greater Kashmir reported that the clashes took place between youth and security forces after the congregational Friday prayer at the historic Jamia Masjid at Nowhatta, Srinagar.

We found that the image posted below is related to a clash between BJP workers and the police outside the Vidhan Bhavan in Lucknow. The incident took place in August 2016. This photograph was also used by Amar Ujala in its report.

“Eight CRPF men killed in Pampore attack, Lashkar-e-Toiba claims credit”, reads the title of a report by The Indian Express, which carried the third image recently shared. The report was published on June 26, 2016.

In conclusion, two images of past clashes between security forces and protesters and the third unrelated image were shared as recent clashes in Kashmir Valley.
