Even as firefighters sought to tame the blaze, reports began to emerge that crucial files related to Nirav Modi and Mehul Choksi, accused in the 11,000 crore PNB scam, have been gutted. These reports were carried by mainstream news outlets. On the evening of June 1, <em>Zee News<\/em> on its channel reported that it is feared that files related to Nirav Modi and disgraced former IPL czar Lalit Modi have been destroyed in the fire. A caption for the story said,\u00a0<em>\u092e\u0941\u0902\u092c\u0908 \u0906\u0917 \u0915\u093e \u0928\u0940\u0930\u0935-\u0932\u0932\u093f\u0924 \u092e\u094b\u0926\u0940 \u0915\u0928\u0947\u0915\u094d\u0936\u0928!(Nirav-Lalit Modi connection to Mumbai fire- translated)<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Breaking 20-20: Fire breaks out in Income Tax office in Mumbai, no casualties reported\" width=\"1290\" height=\"968\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ALYUWTR7HAw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><em>The Tribune<\/em>, in an article quoted &#8216;sources&#8217; to claim that the fire at the IT office building has destroyed files pertaining to Nirav Modi and his uncle Mehul Choksi who are currently absconding.\u00a0<em>Indiatimes<\/em> which is owned by the <em>Times of India<\/em> group reported that files related to the disgraced diamantaire have been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiatimes.com\/news\/india\/fire-in-mumbai-s-it-department-building-files-of-nirav-modi-choksi-mallya-feared-gutted-346682.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>feared gutted<\/em><\/a>. <em>Republic TV<\/em> too <a href=\"https:\/\/www.republicworld.com\/india-news\/general-news\/nirav-modi-mehul-choksis-files-destroyed-in-the-i-t-investigation-department-fire\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">joined the bandwagon<\/a> reporting on the destruction of the files in the blaze, adding that sensitive files related to the Essar group have also been gutted. <a href=\"https:\/\/mumbaimirror.indiatimes.com\/mumbai\/other\/no-casualty-in-scindia-house-fire-crucial-files-may-be-lost\/articleshow\/64422194.cms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Mumbai Mirror<\/em><\/a> which is also owned by the Bennett Coleman group reported this development in an article of June 2, mentioning that it was feared the documents have been lost in the fire. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelallantop.com\/news\/fire-broke-out-in-income-tax-office-at-scindia-house-in-mumbai-where-documents-related-to-nirav-modi-vijay-malya-and-lalit-modi-were-kept\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Lallantop<\/em><\/a>, a popular website also reported about the loss of the files. This tweet has been retweeted close to a thousand times by now.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">In a rather convenient turn of events, a fire burned papers that the Income Tax Department had on Nirav Modi , the man who was photographed with PM Modi before he went on the run after pulling off the largest banking fraud in India. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/ps72fm9AFt\">https:\/\/t.co\/ps72fm9AFt<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Congress (@INCIndia) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/INCIndia\/status\/1003249476318912512?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 3, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This article tweeted by the Congress party can <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tribuneindia.com\/news\/nation\/pnb-fraud-nirav-modi-papers-gutted-in-fire-at-income-tax-office\/599478.html?utm_campaign=news-alert&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=nuzzel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">no longer be found<\/a>, although the other article by <em>The Tribune <\/em>of June 4\u00a0is<a href=\"http:\/\/www.tribuneindia.com\/news\/nation\/nirav-modi-files-gutted-in-i-t-building-blaze\/599814.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> still online<\/a>. Lawyer Prashant Bhushan tweeted on the blaze, saying <em>&#8220;How brazen can they get!&#8221;<\/em>. Gopikrishnan was the among the first to raise suspicion over the files having been destroyed in the blaze. Gopikrishnan tweeted on the evening of June 1,<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"et\">Income Tax Investigation Wing&#8217;s files on Nirav Modi, Mehul Choksi and Upendra Rai burned? \ud83e\udd14\ud83e\udd14\ud83e\udd14\ud83e\udd14 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/BsVIxv6zU9\">https:\/\/t.co\/BsVIxv6zU9<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 J Gopikrishnan (@jgopikrishnan70) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jgopikrishnan70\/status\/1002572966348062722?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 1, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em>Zee News<\/em> was the first to pick it up from here, broadcasting a report on the same day, which has been posted in this article above. Now that the IT Department has unequivocally stated that the reports are not true, it emerges that sections of mainstream media jumped the gun, reporting an incident of immense sensationalist value which had no basis in fact.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Tribune<\/em> has reported this story attributing it to &#8216;sources&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p><em>Zee News<\/em>, on its broadcast, kept referring to &#8216;reports&#8217; that had emerged with regard to the destruction of files in the blaze.<\/p>\n<p><em>Republic TV<\/em> too published this news &#8216;according to reports&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Mumbai Mirror<\/em> story speculated that the files have been destroyed.<\/p>\n<p><em>Indiatimes<\/em> on the other hand made no reference to where this news had emerged from.<\/p>\n<p>In each of these cases, the reports were carried by these publications without independent verification of the facts. The news was either vaguely attributed to &#8216;sources&#8217; or there was no reference to the origin of the news. While source-based reporting is a tactic regularly adopted by journalists, in this particular instance, reference to &#8216;sources&#8217; could not withstand scrutiny as the report was promptly debunked.<\/p>\n<p>The tardy pace of investigation of high-profile cases in general and the low rate of conviction has convinced many citizens of possible foul play at the highest echelons when it comes to investigation of such cases.
