This is what Congress President Rahul Gandhi said at the party&#8217;s national OBC convention in Delhi on June 11. Attacking the Modi government for failing to provide opportunities to skilled members of the OBC community, Gandhi referred to the <em>Coca-Cola<\/em> company whose founder, he claimed, was\u00a0a &#8216;shikanji&#8217; seller in the USA. &#8216;Shikanji&#8217; is similar to lemon juice and is typically enjoyed during summer in North India.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/WATCH?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#WATCH<\/a> Congress President Rahul Gandhi talks about origins of the Coca-Cola &amp; McDonald&#8217;s company, says, &#8220;Coca-Cola company ko shuru karne wala ek shikanji bechne wala vyakti tha&#8230;&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Delhi?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Delhi<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/MATnaR734J\">pic.twitter.com\/MATnaR734J<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 ANI (@ANI) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ANI\/status\/1006095051083005952?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 11, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The Congress president\u2019s statement expectedly became the butt of jokes on Twitter, with many posting memes and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=%23AccordingtoRahulGandhi&amp;src=typd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>#AccordingToRahulGandhi<\/em><\/a> trending on the social media platform.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>The truth to Rahul Gandhi\u2019s alternative fact<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>A mere <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Pemberton\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wikipedia search<\/a> reveals that the founder of <em>Coca-Cola<\/em> was a pharmacist named John Stith Pemberton from Atlanta, Georgia. In 1865, Pemberton, also a lieutenant colonel in the American army, suffered a saber wound during the Battle of Columbus and became addicted to morphine after he started using it as a painkiller. He did not invent the famous aerated drink to become a rich businessman, as claimed by Gandhi, but created it to cure his morphine addiction.<\/p>\n<p>An article in<em> <a href=\"http:\/\/newsfeed.time.com\/2011\/02\/15\/is-this-the-real-thing-coca-colas-secret-formula-discovered\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">TIME magazine<\/a> <\/em>says he formulated a brew &#8211; Pemberton\u2019s French Wine Coca that included kola nut and coca wine &#8211; to cure his ailment. But as Atlanta introduced an alcohol prohibition law in 1886, he reformulated the brew without alcohol and named it <em>Coca-Cola<\/em>. Pemberton, who is described as a &#8216;failed pharmacist&#8217; in a documentary on <em>Coca-Cola<\/em>\u2019s history available on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ToYfRlEDY_E\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">YouTube<\/a>, had now begun selling his formula in Georgia\u2019s pharmacies.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Coca Cola History Documentary\" width=\"1290\" height=\"968\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ToYfRlEDY_E?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>When <em>Coca-Cola<\/em> was first marketed in 1886, it was pitched as a nerve tonic that relieves exhaustion.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-14445 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2018\/06\/word-image-19.png\" width=\"701\" height=\"1011\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2018\/06\/word-image-19.png 710w, https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2018\/06\/word-image-19-208x300.png 208w, https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2018\/06\/word-image-19-696x1004.png 696w, https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2018\/06\/word-image-19-291x420.png 291w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 701px) 100vw, 701px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Rahul Gandhi wished to create an image of a humble lemonade seller who rose to prosperity caused by launching <em>Coca-Cola<\/em>. But sales figures of the time,\u00a0published in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldofcoca-cola.com\/about-us\/coca-cola-history\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">history section<\/a> of the brand&#8217;s official website, show that the first\u00a0servings of<em> Coca\u2011Cola<\/em> were sold for 5 cents per glass. In the first year, an average of nine servings of <em>Coca-Cola<\/em> was sold per day in Atlanta. The company eventually emerged as a global giant and is ranked among the <a href=\"http:\/\/interbrand.com\/best-brands\/best-global-brands\/2015\/ranking\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">most valuable brands<\/a> in the world today, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldofcoca-cola.com\/about-us\/coca-cola-history\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">annual servings of 1.9 billion daily<\/a> according to the firm.<\/p>\n<p>However,\u00a0Pemberton did not live to see this transformation. He died two years after creating the sparkling beverage. Prior to his death due to deteriorating health, the business suffered losses and Pemberton was forced to sell his last remaining stake to different parties. Majority of the business was sold to an Atlanta businessman, Asa G Chandler, who was the main person behind <em>Coca-Cola&#8217;s<\/em> popularity beyond the city. In fact, the company&#8217;s official archivist Philip Mooney said in <em>Coca-Cola&#8217;s<\/em> history document that although Pemberton created the beverage, the product would not have achieved great success had he remained the man behind it.<\/p>\n<p>Rahul Gandhi\u2019s claims fall short of his expected intentions. However, the misinformed statement about<em> Coca-Cola<\/em> wasn\u2019t the only time eyebrows were raised during his speech.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>&#8220;McDonald&#8217;s started by a dhabawala&#8221;<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Gandhi also cited the example of American fast-food chain <em>McDonald\u2019s<\/em>, saying that it was started by a <em>\u201cdhabawala\u201d<\/em>. The Congress President though gets the benefit of doubt on this one. The burger chain was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcdonalds.com\/us\/en-us\/about-us\/our-history.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">started<\/a> by Patrick McDonald in 1937 <em>as a food stand<\/em> near Monrovia airport, California. In 1940, his sons (Mac and Dick) moved to San Bernardino, California and renamed it to \u2018McDonald\u2019s Bar-B-Que\u2019. The brothers introduced its simple menu of burgers, fries and cold drinks in 1948 before Ray Kroc finalised a franchise agreement with the McDonald brothers and inaugurated the first franchise of the brand in Illinois in 1955.
