Pakistan did not come out to bat.<\/p>\n<p>Later that night, a purported statement to NDTV by Sunil Gavaskar went viral on X (formerly Twitter). The former opening batsman and now commentator reportedly told NDTV, &#8220;It should be a matter of utter shame for us as Indians for politicizing, ruining and basically hijacking this beautiful game of cricket. BCCI has let India down and tonight\u2019s results are a testimony of it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The said comments by Gavaskar were first tweeted from a handle named <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20230904081110\/https:\/\/twitter.com\/hi__hassan\/status\/1698017143449952343?t=w9K-58hDoB06uCFN0ReYOA&amp;s=08\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hassan (@hi__hassan)<\/a>. It was reposted around 2,500 times and viewed almost 13 Lakh times.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Sunil Gavaskar on NDTV: It should be a matter of utter shame for us as Indians for politicizing, ruining and basically hijacking this beautiful game of cricket. BCCI has let India down and tonight\u2019s results are a testimony of it. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/hCvUlevSwh\">pic.twitter.com\/hCvUlevSwh<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 \ud835\udc89\ud835\udc82\ud835\udc94\ud835\udc94\ud835\udc82\ud835\udc8f (@hi__hassan) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hi__hassan\/status\/1698017143449952343?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 2, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>About an hour later, the user <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hi__hassan\/status\/1698031182125076506\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">replied to his own tweet<\/a>, saying &#8220;Sunil Gavaskar putting his retirement life on line in front of 1.2 billion mob-lynchers is highly appreciated. Hope his media contracts aren&#8217;t affected after speaking truth on national television.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>We noted that while <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hi__hassan\/status\/1698017143449952343\/retweets\/with_comments\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">quote-tweeting Hassan<\/a> or replying to his tweet, some users expressed doubts over the authenticity of the &#8216;quote&#8217;. But at the same time, others took it at face value and expressed their opinions.<\/p>\n<p>Several other X users tweeted Sunil Gavaskar&#8217;s photo and the &#8216;quote&#8217; and made the same claim. It\u2019s absolutely ridiculous that people would use his name to get more engagement,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">This is a completely fabricated statement attributed to my father . He hasn\u2019t made this statement and someone is just trying to create mischief . It\u2019s absolutely ridiculous that people would use his name to get more engagement . Please retweet so that the truth prevails <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/UNLOk5GVXr\">https:\/\/t.co\/UNLOk5GVXr<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Rohan Gavaskar (@rohangava9) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/rohangava9\/status\/1698437631103623632?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 3, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/rohangava9\/status\/1698437860162929137\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">He also pointed<\/a> out that the senior Gavaskar was under contract with India Today, and hence was not in a position to speak to NDTV anyway.<\/p>\n<h4>Refuted by NDTV<\/h4>\n<p>We also performed a Google search, but could not find any news report on Gavaskar&#8217;s alleged remarks. A keyword search revealed that NDTV had not done any story where Gavaskar had commented on the &#8216;politicization of cricket&#8217;. All NDTV English reports which mention Sunil Gavaskar can be found <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ndtv.com\/topic\/sunil-gavaskar\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>To corroborate this, we reached out to NDTV. Sports editor Rica Roy confirmed to us that Sunil Gavaskar had not made any such comment to the television channel and NDTV had not run any such bulletin. We also contacted the digital sports desk of the outlet. &#8220;The sports desk has not done any such report,&#8221; they confirmed.<\/p>\n<p>CricketNDTV (@CricketNDTV) later put out a tweet refuting the claim. &#8220;The comment in the tweet is wrongly attributed to NDTV. No such remarks were made to NDTV by Sunil Gavaskar,&#8221; it said.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">The comment in the tweet is wrongly attributed to NDTV.
