Earlier this week, violence perpetrated by Kanwar Yatra pilgrims was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.firstpost.com\/india\/kanwar-yatra-as-annual-pilgrimage-concludes-today-amid-violence-and-vandalism-a-primer-on-kanwariyas-4929211.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> from across states in North India. <\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"False rumour about Muslims perpetrating violence as part of Kanwaar Yatris\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/284403514?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"1030\" height=\"672\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>On August 9, Prashant Patel Umrao put out a <a href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20180810133932\/https:\/\/twitter.com\/ippatel\/status\/1027511666475290625?s=21\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tweet<\/a> at four in the morning, claiming that Muslims are <em>&#8220;doing violence in many places to defame Kanwar Yatra.&#8221;<\/em> He attached a\u00a0<em>Dainik Jagran\u00a0<\/em>article titled <em>&#8220;Two Muslim youth dressed as Kanwariyas caught by police&#8221;\u00a0<\/em>and added that real pilgrims cannot perpetuate violence against innocent civilians. His tweet implied that Muslims are responsible for the recent <a href=\"https:\/\/timesofindia.indiatimes.com\/city\/meerut\/video-showing-kanwariyas-attacking-car-looting-owners-belongings-goes-viral\/articleshow\/65344291.cms\">violence<\/a> ensuing Kanwar Yatra. It attracted over 2,600 likes and more than 2,300 retweets.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Peaceful are doing violence in the dress of Kanwarias in many places to defame Kanwar Yatra. Real pilgrims can&#8217;t do violence with innocent citizens. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/vjZXYtOEts\">pic.twitter.com\/vjZXYtOEts<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Prashant Patel Umrao (@ippatel) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ippatel\/status\/1027511666475290625?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 9, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Minutes after Umrao&#8217;s tweet, <a href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20180810160446\/https:\/\/twitter.com\/squintneon\/status\/1027518705704550403\">Squint Neon<\/a> made out a similar tweet at 4:35 AM. While returning, they bought two bhagwa (orange) scarves and wrapped it around themselves to resemble the other pilgrims. They claimed to do so to avoid being stopped by the police on the way back. However, their motorcycle hit a constable hence, they were detained. The one riding the bike was arrested by the police. The incident occurred in Saharanpur area of Uttar Pradesh.<\/p>\n<p>Alt News contacted Saharanpur SSP Upendra Kumar Yadav who told as that both the youths have been released. <em>&#8220;The boys were riding a bike when the accidentally\u00a0hit a constable. For this reason, we had to take them into custody. During the enquiry, they told us that somebody asked them to wear bhagwa\u00a0scarves because the road would be jammed during the yatra and it would be easier for them to commute if they looked like <\/em><em>Kanwariyas.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>When asked if they were involved in any sort of violence, the SSP denied and said that the youths were only trying to move past the crowd quickly but unfortunately hit a constable by mistake. A complaint was registered on their names but both have been released now.<\/p>\n<p>A misleading, divisive tweet from Prashant Patel Umrao is no longer a matter of surprise.
