However, the\u00a0Dainik Jagran\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jagran.com\/news\/national-sonia-worlds-fourth-richest-politician-9008314.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">article<\/a>\u00a0said that Gandhi was the fourth richest &#8220;politician&#8221; in the world. According to the report, &#8220;American website Business Insider made this claim. As per the site, Sonia Gandhi has a net worth of between US$ 2-19 billion.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The same was also reported by several other media outlets, including\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/aajtak.intoday.in\/story\/US-website-says-Sonia-wealth-at-$2-19-bn-1-693413.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Aaj Tak<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/hindi.oneindia.com\/news\/india\/sonia-gandhi-is-richer-than-elizabeth-two-275223.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">One India<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bhaskar.com\/mp\/bhopal\/news\/MAT-MP-BPL-c-58-2086299-NOR.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dainik\u00a0<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bhaskar.com\/mp\/bhopal\/news\/MAT-MP-BPL-c-58-2086299-NOR.html\">Bhaskar<\/a> and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/swarajyanews.com\/NewsDescription.aspx?id=489\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Swarajya News<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Alt News looked for the\u00a0Business Insider\u00a0story mentioned in all of these reports\u00a0and discovered a March 2, 2012 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/richest-politicians-in-the-world-2012-2?IR=T\">report<\/a>\u00a0titled &#8211;\u00a0&#8216;Meet The 23 Richest Politicians In The World&#8217;. Gandhi was fourth in the list, with the article claiming that her net worth was between US$ 2-19 billion.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Is Sonia Gandhi indeed the world&#8217;s fourth-richest politician? <\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The\u00a0Business Insider\u00a0story hyperlinked a website named\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.worlds-luxury-guide.com\/Luxury-News\/433295\/List-Worlds-Richest-Politicians\">&#8216;World&#8217;s Luxury Guide&#8217;<\/a>\u00a0as its source. When Alt News attempted to access the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.worlds-luxury-guide.com\/Luxury-News\/433295\/List-Worlds-Richest-Politicians\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">URL<\/a> provided by Business Insider, we were redirected to a &#8220;Not Found&#8221; page. In 2012,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/news\/blog\/2012\/oct\/26\/who-are-the-wealthiest-world-leaders\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Guardian<\/a> had published a report on the world&#8217;s richest leaders, however, it too did not include Gandhi., Alt News back-searched till 2010 on the website of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/search?query=sonia+gandhi&amp;sort=time:desc&amp;endTime=2018-09-28T15:34:31.641Z&amp;page=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bloomberg<\/a> but found nothing of relevance. The remaining attribution provided by Business Insider &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/search?q=sonia+gandhi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">OpenSecret<\/a> &#8211; has never written any report on the Congress president.<\/p>\n<p>It was thus evident that\u00a0Business Insider\u00a0(and &#8216;World&#8217;s Luxury Guide&#8217;)\u00a0was not a source that could be trusted.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2.\u00a0&#8216;National Election Watch&#8217;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Business Insider\u00a0mentioned in its article that the <a href=\"http:\/\/myneta.info\/ls2009\/candidate.php?candidate_id=5613\">&#8216;National Election Watch&#8217;<\/a> put Sonia Gandhi&#8217;s net worth at US$200,000 (approximately Rs 1.37 crore in 2012).<\/p>\n<p>Accessing this link redirected us to a report that provided the assets declared by Sonia Gandhi before 2004, 2009 and 2014 Lok Sabha elections. The latest figures (2014) put her net worth at over Rs 9.28 crore. As the\u00a0Business Insider\u00a0article was published in 2012, it must have referred to the figures Gandhi had disclosed in 2009 &#8211; Rs 1.37 crore.
