With the caption “retweet indicates someone is fighting for Pakistan in India”<\/em>, Minister of State for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Giriraj Singh, on October 25, tweeted a screenshot of Rahul Gandhi’s tweet on former CBI Director Alok Verma. Gandhi’s tweet was retweeted by a Twitter account “Pakistan Defence” and the language used by Giriraj Singh in his tweet\u00a0attempted to imply that the Congress President is supported by Pakistan’s Defence wing. His tweet was liked over 1,500 times and retweeted 810 times at the time of writing this article.<\/p>\n

Anurag Dixit\u00a0also made the identical claim, with his tweet drawing over 1,000 retweets. Dixit is followed by top leaders of the BJP, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi.<\/p>\n

Several others who are followed by the office of Railway Minister Piyush Goyal also circulated that the Pakistani Defense wing retweeted Rahul Gandhi’s tweet.<\/p>\n

The retweet was by an online forum that discusses Pakistani defence issues<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Within hours of the aforestated tweets, it was\u00a0<\/em>pointed out<\/a> that the account which retweeted Rahul Gandhi’s tweet wasn’t the official handle of the Defense Ministry of Pakistan. However, none of those who made the claim took down their tweets.<\/p>\n

There are several clues that indicated that the Twitter account “Pakistan Defence” (@defencedotpk)<\/em>, which retweeted Rahul Gandhi, has nothing to do with Pakistan’s Defence Wing:<\/p>\n

  1. It does not have a blue tick which verifies the authenticity of a Twitter handle.<\/li>\n
  2. The bio reads –\u00a0“Hit our website for free membership”.\u00a0<\/em>A country’s defence wing can never offer “free membership” to civilians.<\/li>\n
  3. The bio also includes a website – “defence.pk\/pdf\/”<\/a>. <\/em>This website lists\u00a0@defencedotpk<\/em> as its official Twitter handle.\u00a0However,\u00a0defence.pk<\/em> is not the official website of Pakistan’s Ministry of Defence and was started as a forum to discuss issues pertaining to the Pakistani army. Any Pakistani government website ends with\u00a0“gov.pk” <\/em>and the\u00a0URL of the official website of the defence ministry is\u00a0mod.gov.pk<\/a>.\u00a0<\/em><\/li>\n
  4. Ministry of Defence, Pakistan does not have an official Twitter handle.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Numerous unofficial\/parody accounts\u00a0are active on social media and it is common to fall for them. Alt News had earlier reported<\/a> how parody accounts of several news organisations fooled individuals on the internet. In June this year, a parody account of Warren Buffet escaped the noticed of\u00a0The Economic Times<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>which published one of its tweets on the daily. Several social media users had also fallen for a parody handle dedicated to Tripura CM Biplab Deb<\/a>.<\/p>\n

    However, a cabinet minister posting the screenshot of a retweet by the Twitter handle of an\u00a0online forum to imply that Rahul Gandhi is “fighting for Pakistan in India” cannot be ignored as a mere slight. Despite several social media users pointing out the falseness of the retweet, Giriraj Singh and others are yet to take down their tweets and issue a clarification.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
