The release of S Shankar’s ‘2.0’, a Tamil science fiction movie starring Rajnikanth and Akshay Kumar, sparked up a discourse on the effects of\u00a0electromagnetic field (EMF) radiation on birds. The film’s message – birds die due to\u00a0radiation – was portrayed with scenes showing them crash into cell phone towers.<\/p>\n

While\u00a0the possible impact of communication towers on birds is debatable and will be discussed later in this article, we will first look at media reports that exaggerated the story with a false claim.<\/p>\n

“5G cellular test caused the death of hundreds of birds in The Netherlands”<\/strong><\/h2>\n

On December 5,\u00a0Zee News\u00a0<\/em>tweeted<\/a> an article captioned –\u00a0“The danger shown in Akshay Kumar’s 2.0 proved to be true! Hundreds of birds killed in Netherland due to 5G (translated).”\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Zee News\u00a0<\/em>cited Californian website\u00a0Galactic Connection<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>as the\u00a0source.<\/p>\n

Fake news<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The claim that birds died in The Netherlands due to 5G trials circulated globally.<\/p>\n

American fact-checking website\u00a0Snopes<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>reported that a “medical conspiracy blog”\u00a0Health Nut News<\/a><\/em> by Erin Elizabeth published an article on November 5 titled –\u00a0“Hundreds of birds dead during 5G experiment in The Hague, The Netherlands.”\u00a0<\/em>Elizabeth describes<\/a>\u00a0herself as an ‘investigative journalist’ on her YouTube channel.<\/p>\n

According to\u00a0Snopes,\u00a0<\/em>her article was a reproduction of Facebook posts<\/a> authored by one John Kuhles.<\/p>\n

Kuhles was the same person who\u00a0suggested<\/a> that the November 2018 California wildfire<\/a> was triggered by a direct energy weapon as an act of revenge from the \u201cRuling Elite\u201d to punish the state for vetoing a \u201cmass 5G deployment\u201d plan.<\/p>\n

According to Snopes<\/em>, while a series of mysterious bird deaths<\/a> did occur at a park in The Hague starting October 19, it could not be linked to 5G cellular network test. The Consumer Product Safety Authority was investigating possible viruses and poisoning.<\/p>\n

The fact-checking website reported that “Kuhles tied the factual existence of unexplained bird deaths at a park (Huijgenspark) in The Hague, Netherlands, to a non-existent test of a next-generation cell phone network (5G) that he claimed (without evidence) took place simultaneous with the bird deaths.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Moreover, a 5G trial<\/a>\u00a0that\u00a0was held\u00a0in an area near<\/a>\u00a0Huijgenspark\u00a0<\/em>on June 28, 2018, was not followed by a massive falling of birds from the sky. It was a one-day event permitted by the Dutch equivalent of the US’\u00a0Federal Communications Commission (FCC).<\/p>\n

Snopes\u00a0<\/em>also confirmed from multiple other sources that no other such test took place in The Hague.<\/p>\n

Misinformation circulated by several Tamil media outlets<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Following the release of ‘2.0’, which revolves around a plot depicting harmful effects of EMF radiation on birds, Indian news organisations, mostly Tamil media, published stories on the movie by adding the ‘birds died in The Netherlands due to 5G’ bit.<\/p>\n

News18 Tamil Nadu<\/a>, Oneindia Tamil<\/a>, Puthiyathalaimurai<\/a>, Samayam Tamil<\/a><\/em>\u00a0and Webdunia Tamil<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>were among those that propagated the narrative.\u00a0Hindi media outlet\u00a0Patrika<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>also published a similar story titled –\u00a0“If 5G network comes into this world, their lives will be lost (translated).”<\/em><\/p>\n

Can 5G cellular network cause the death of birds?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Mobile phones operate in the\u00a0high frequency (HF)<\/a>\u00a0range of the electromagnetic spectrum – from 100 kHz (0.1 MHz) to 300 GHz (3 lakh MHz), per the\u00a0International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection\u00a0(ICNIRP). India follows ICNIRP guidelines and has one of the most stringent standards<\/a> on EMF radiations. Airtel and Vodafone currently\u00a0offer 4G<\/a> in the 1800MHz and 2100MHz bands, while Jio uses a lower band of 800 MHz.<\/p>\n

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is in talks to open up new spectrum bands for 5G in the 3300-3600 MHz<\/a> frequency range. All the above-mentioned frequency ranges are well within the permissible limit.<\/p>\n

The only known test of 5G in The Hague, which fueled misinformation, utilized the 3.4-3.8GHz band or 3,400 to 3,800MHz, according to\u00a0Snopes.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

The fact-checking website spoke to Dr. Eric van Rongen, a member of the Health Council of The Netherlands and the Chairman of ICNIRP, who informed,\u00a0“The only way one could imagine death of birds as a result of exposure to electromagnetic fields is with very high level exposure that results in considerable heating \u2026 But the levels that are used by mobile telecom antennas are not strong enough for this to happen. There are maybe millions of such antennas around the world and this has never been reported.”<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cEven if there would have been 5G exposure, it is very unlikely that that could cause the [bird] mortality,\u201d<\/em> he concluded.<\/p>\n

Therefore, media reports claiming that birds crashing into towers and dying due to EMF radiations, as shown in ‘2.0’, is likely to happen because a similar incident occurred in The Netherlands, are not only wrong but their assertions are also unfounded.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
