He circulated the claim on both <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AshwiniBJP\/status\/1082139123819921410?s=19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Twitter<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/Upadhyay.Ashwini.BJP\/posts\/1970071166421892?__tn__=-R\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Facebook<\/a>, drawing a combined share (plus retweet) count of nearly 1,600.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-25447 \" src=\"http:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2019\/01\/sonia-gandhi.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"331\" height=\"491\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2019\/01\/sonia-gandhi.png 406w, https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2019\/01\/sonia-gandhi-202x300.png 202w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 331px) 100vw, 331px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Upadhyay had <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AshwiniBJP\/status\/603944347256553472?s=19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tweeted<\/a> the same article in 2015 as well.<\/p>\n<p>Other BJP members &#8211; the party&#8217;s Delhi social media and IT cell head,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Punitspeaks\/status\/1082113729091829760?s=19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Punit Agarwal,<\/a>\u00a0and co-convenor BJP Delhi IT and social media, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/iSinghVikash\/status\/1082559186062368769\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vikash Singh<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; also tweeted the\u00a0<em>TOI\u00a0<\/em>article on January\u00a07.\u00a0 In fact, the claim is viral on Twitter.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"False: Viral claims that Sonia Gandhi is richer than Queen Elizabeth-II\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/310290375?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"586\" height=\"476\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>A 6-year-old misreport<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The 2013\u00a0report by <em>TOI\u00a0<\/em>attributed the source of the information to\u00a0<em>Huffington Post,\u00a0<\/em>according to which, <em>&#8220;Sonia Gandhi is the 12th richest political leader in the world.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-25450 \" src=\"http:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2019\/01\/gandhi.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"486\" height=\"484\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2019\/01\/gandhi.png 606w, https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2019\/01\/gandhi-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2019\/01\/gandhi-300x300.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 486px) 100vw, 486px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Alt News found that on November 29, 2013,\u00a0<em>Huffington Post\u00a0<\/em>had indeed published a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2013\/11\/29\/richest-world-leaders_n_4178514.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">story<\/a> on the richest world leaders and placed Sonia Gandhi in the 12th position. However, the former INC President\u2019s name was subsequently removed from the story as the information\u2019s source, as clarified later by <em>Huffington Post<\/em>, was\u00a0<em>\u201ccalled into question.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-25451 \" src=\"http:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2019\/01\/huff.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"655\" height=\"253\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2019\/01\/huff.png 803w, https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2019\/01\/huff-300x116.png 300w, https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2019\/01\/huff-768x296.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 655px) 100vw, 655px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A December 2013 report by\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiatoday.in\/india\/north\/story\/how-sonia-gandhi-2-billion-wealth-is-calculated-inside-story-219374-2013-12-02\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">India Today<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>had\u00a0found that\u00a0<em>Huffington Post\u2019s\u00a0<\/em>claims about\u00a0Gandhi\u2019s net worth were based on a report published by a website called\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.celebritynetworth.com\/richest-politicians\/presidents\/sonia-gandhi-net-worth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Celebrity Net\u00a0<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.celebritynetworth.com\/richest-politicians\/presidents\/sonia-gandhi-net-worth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Worth<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>which routinely writes on celebrity finances.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-25452 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2019\/01\/celeb.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"883\" height=\"467\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2019\/01\/celeb.jpg 883w, https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2019\/01\/celeb-300x159.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2019\/01\/celeb-768x406.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 883px) 100vw, 883px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>According to the website,\u00a0<em>\u201cShe (Sonia Gandhi) personally states her wealth to be between $200,000 and $500,000, but several sources including <strong>OpenSecrets.org and Business Insider<\/strong> have estimated that Sonia\u2019s actual wealth could be as low as $2 billion and might be as high as $19 billion.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<h5><strong>Investigating <em>OpenSecrets.org<\/em> and <em>Business Insider<\/em><\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>In a March 2, 2012\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/richest-politicians-in-the-world-2012-2?IR=T\">report<\/a>\u00a0titled \u2013\u00a0<em>\u2018Meet The 23 Richest Politicians In The World\u2019\u00a0<\/em>&#8211;\u00a0<em>Business Insider <\/em>placed\u00a0Gandhi 4th in the list, with the article claiming that her net worth was between US$ 2-19 billion.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<em>Business Insider\u00a0<\/em>story hyperlinked a website named\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.worlds-luxury-guide.com\/Luxury-News\/433295\/List-Worlds-Richest-Politicians\">\u2018World\u2019s Luxury Guide\u2019<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0as its source. It also said that there are some disputes about Gandhi\u2019s actual net worth and that the<strong>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/myneta.info\/ls2009\/candidate.php?candidate_id=5613\">\u2018National Election Watch\u2019<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>put the same at US$200,000 (approximately Rs 1.35 crores at that time).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-25453 \" src=\"http:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2019\/01\/whatevs.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"484\" height=\"470\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2019\/01\/whatevs.png 631w, https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2019\/01\/whatevs-300x291.png 300w, https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2019\/01\/whatevs-434x420.png 434w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 484px) 100vw, 484px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The website \u2018World\u2019s Luxury Guide\u2019\u00a0has been taken down since over a year. Accessing an <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20120701062051\/http:\/\/www.worlds-luxury-guide.com\/Luxury-News\/433295\/List-Worlds-Richest-Politicians\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">archived version<\/a> of the &#8216;list of richest leaders&#8217; created by the website revealed that it also placed Sonia Gandhi at the 4th place. &#8216;World\u2019s Luxury Guide\u2019 had provided\u00a0<em>opensecret.org, forbes.com, bloomberg.com, wikipedia.org<\/em>\u00a0and<em>\u00a0guardian.co.uk<\/em>\u00a0as its sources.<\/p>\n<p><em>Forbes\u00a0<\/em>had published an article in 2011 titled \u2013 \u2018India\u2019s 100 Richest\u2019 \u2013 which does not include Gandhi\u2019s name. In 2012,\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/news\/blog\/2012\/oct\/26\/who-are-the-wealthiest-world-leaders\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Guardian<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>had published a report on the world\u2019s richest leaders, however, it too did not include Gandhi. On\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/search?query=sonia+gandhi&amp;sort=time:desc&amp;endTime=2018-09-28T15:34:31.641Z&amp;page=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bloomberg<\/a>,\u00a0<\/em>Alt News back-searched till 2010 but found nothing of relevance. The remaining attribution provided by\u00a0<em>Business Insider \u2013<\/em>\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.opensecrets.org\/search?q=sonia+gandhi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">OpenSecret<\/a>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0<\/em>has never written any report on the former Congress President.<\/p>\n<p>Thus, none of the sources enlisted by &#8216;World&#8217;s Luxury Guide&#8217; had the data to back up the claim of Sonia Gandhi being the world&#8217;s 4th richest politician. Moreover, the name of the website itself should indicate that it is not a source that could be trusted.<\/p>\n<p>The other source mentioned by\u00a0<em>Business Insider\u00a0<\/em>was <a href=\"http:\/\/myneta.info\/ls2009\/candidate.php?candidate_id=5613\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8216;National Election Watch,&#8217;<\/a> claiming that it\u00a0put Sonia Gandhi\u2019s net worth at US$200,000 (approximately Rs 1.37 crore in 2012).<\/p>\n<p>Accessing the link redirected us to a report that provided the assets declared by Gandhi before 2004, 2009 and 2014 Lok Sabha elections. The latest figures (2014) put her net worth at over Rs 9.28 crore. As the\u00a0<em>Business Insider\u00a0<\/em>article was published in 2012, it must have referred to the figures Gandhi had disclosed in 2009 \u2013 Rs 1.37 crore. This matched the \u201cdisputed net worth\u201d claims on\u00a0<em>Business Insider<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-25454 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2019\/01\/election-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"908\" height=\"259\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2019\/01\/election-1.png 908w, https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2019\/01\/election-1-300x86.png 300w, https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2019\/01\/election-1-768x219.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 908px) 100vw, 908px\" \/>A\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/adrindia.org\/sites\/default\/files\/0.10%20full%20report%2020-05-2010.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">compendium<\/a>\u00a0published by\u00a0the<em>\u00a0Association for Democratic Reform (ADR)\u00a0<\/em>in 2012 had also put Gandhi\u2019s assets at Rs 1.37 crore.\u00a0In 2014,\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiatoday.in\/elections\/highlights\/story\/how-rich-is-sonia-gandhi-affidavit-rae-bareli-lok-sabha-polls-187296-2014-04-02\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">India Today<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>provided copies of Gandhi\u2019s nomination papers before the Rae Bareli Lok Sabha elections, according to which she declared total movable assets to the tune of Rs 2.82 crore.<\/p>\n<p>The evidence at hand suggests that the claims that Gandhi&#8217;s net worth is between $2-19 billion, more than that of the Queen of England, are unfounded.\u00a0<em>The Times of India\u00a0<\/em>article, recently viral on social media, had republished the report by\u00a0<em>Huffington Post<\/em>, which later removed Gandhi&#8217;s name as the source itself was not credible.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Sonia Gandhi - 4th Richest in the World? WATCH!\" width=\"1290\" height=\"726\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/C01UFCyMuE0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Alt News had debunked this misinformation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/is-sonia-gandhi-the-4th-richest-woman-in-the-world-as-claimed-by-viral-social-media-posts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">earlier<\/a>, regardless of which it is again being circulated widely.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>TOI fails to clarify even after six years<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The false claims about Sonia Gandhi&#8217;s net worth have been floating on social media for quite some time now. As revealed through the course of this article, the misinformation originated on a flimsy website (&#8216;World&#8217;s Luxury Guide&#8217;) which doesn&#8217;t exist anymore. Media outlet\u00a0<em>Business Insider\u00a0<\/em>picked up the story, which was then used by <em>Huffington Post\u00a0<\/em>and subsequently by\u00a0<em>The Times of India.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Upon realising that the source was not credible, <em>Huffington Post\u00a0<\/em>retracted Gandhi&#8217;s name and added a clarification to its report. <em>The Times of India,\u00a0<\/em>however, failed to do so, giving rise to the recent deluge of misinformation.<\/p>\n<p>Both the article and\u00a0<em>TOI&#8217;s\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/timesofindia\/status\/407431492764454912\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tweet<\/a> are still present on the internet.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-25473 \" src=\"http:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2019\/01\/queen.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"430\" height=\"434\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2019\/01\/queen.png 555w, https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2019\/01\/queen-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2019\/01\/queen-297x300.png 297w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 430px) 100vw, 430px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><b>Shared by users followed by top BJP brass<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>The claim that &#8216;Sonia Gandhi is richer than Queen Elizbeth-II&#8217; was shared on Twitter by many followed by top BJP leaders.
