A video clip of a man with a knife standing amid a crowd of onlookers and being shot at by the police is going viral. It is claimed that UP Police shot down Dada Abdul Gaffar of Saharanpur “this Sunday” at the marketplace as he threatened and abused the locals and the police.<\/span><\/p>\n

X (formerly Twitter) handle @rajasolank71070<\/a> shared the video on September 09, 2024, with the claim that ‘dada’ Abdul Gaffar of Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh was waving his knife and abusing the locals “this Sunday” at a marketplace. As the “Yogi Baba’s police” arrived, he continued his threats and curses. To this, police took action, so that no other Gaffar would try to come out of their holes for the next 10 years, at least.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The tweet has garnered more than 6 Lakh views and has been re-tweeted close to 3,000 times.<\/p>\n

Several X handles, including @sk465g<\/a>, @KamalR_BJP<\/a>, @ankit_miishra<\/a>, @Priyaaa_B<\/a>, and @MeenakshiTri04<\/a>, have shared and re-shared the same claim.<\/p>\n

We noticed that the video along with similar claims had gone viral at least twice in the past.<\/p>\n

On March 15, 2024, X handle @VinubhaiPatel8 shared the video with a similar claim — that it was from Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh. According to him, the name of the perpetrator was Abdul Masood.<\/p>\n

We found that UP police fact-checked this video when it had gone viral in March 2024. The official handle of UP Police Fact Check (@UPPViralCheck) said, “The video is not from UP. We also noted that Saharanpur Police had shared the above tweet<\/a> in reply to the tweet by @rajasolank71070<\/span> (embedded at the beginning of the story).<\/p>\n

Taking a cue from this, we performed a keyword search which led us to several news reports from February 6, 2023.<\/p>\n

A\u00a0report by the Hindustan Times<\/a> states that the incident occurred around 9 pm on Saturday (February 4, 2023) in Bhrahmapura police station area. The man seen in the video brandishing a knife was identified by police as Mohammed Fazal Jafar, a 28-years old fruit vendor. The Kalaburagi police in Karnataka approached the man and asked him to put down the knife, however, as he threatened to attack, an officer opened fire at Jafar and recovered the weapon from him.<\/p>\n

Another news article by the Indian Express<\/a> stated, “Police in Karnataka\u2019s Kalaburagi opened fire at a man\u2019s lower limbs after he was found carrying knives and allegedly threatening the public in a market area. This story, however, claimed the incident had happened on Sunday, February 5.<\/p>\n

Both the reports carried visuals which matched the visuals in the viral video.<\/p>\n
