The Lok Sabha passed the Waqf (Amendment) Bill<\/a> in the early hours of Thursday, April 3, after a marathon 12-hour debate, with 288 parliamentarians voting for it and 232 voting against. During the debate, BJP leader and Puri MP Sambiit Patra on April 2 claimed<\/a> that several Islamic countries such as Turkey, Libya, Egypt, Sudan, Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Tunisia, Iraq did not have the system of Waqf.<\/p>\n

Same Claim was Made by PIB in 2024<\/h4>\n

Union minority affairs minister Kiren Rijiju had on August 8, 2024, proposed the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, and the Mussalman Wakf (Repeal) Bill, 2024, in the Lok Sabha, seeking to amend the existing working protocol of Waqf Boards. The proposed Bill immediately sparked a controversy<\/a>, with a section of community leaders, activists, opposition figures and legal experts criticizing it on the grounds that it might risk misuse and threaten minority rights. A joint parliamentary committee<\/a> consisting of 31 lawmakers \u2014 21 Lok Sabha and 10 Rajya Sabha members \u2014 were set up to review the proposed changes in the Waqf Act.<\/p>\n

Against this backdrop, the Press Information Bureau, the nodal agency of the Government of India, released an explainer<\/a> regarding the Waqf Amendment Bill. The explainer has several sections such as \u2014 “What is the meaning of \u2018Waqf\u2019?”, “What is origin of the concept of \u2018Waqf\u2019?”, “What are the key legislative changes and developments in the administration of Waqf properties in India through Waqf Act?”, etc. Under the section titled, “Do all the Islamic Countries have Waqf Properties?<\/a>“, the explainer stated that many Islamic countries did not have Waqf properties. It said: “No, not all the Islamic countries have Waqf properties. Islamic Countries such as Turkey, Libya, Egypt, Sudan, Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Tunisia, and Iraq do not have Waqfs.<\/strong> However, in India, not only are Waqf Boards the largest urban landowners, but they also have an Act protecting them legally.”<\/p>\n
