At least three people have been killed in large-scale violence in West Bengal\u2019s Murshidabad<\/a> resulting from protests against the Waqf Amendment Act. While the Calcutta high court has ordered deployment of Central Armed Police Force personnel<\/a> to restore normalcy in the district, the Trinamool Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party have been exchanging barbs on who is responsible for the deterioration of communal harmony in the state.<\/p>\n

In this context, the official X handle of BJP West Bengal on April 13 shared a collage of nine images showing scenes of violence and arson. Each image has the name of a Hindu festival written on it. The tweet said, “Doesn\u2019t matter the festival \u2014 they just need an excuse to burn it all down.” Additionally they wrote, “\u09ae\u09ae\u09a4\u09be \u09ac\u09cd\u09af\u09be\u09a8\u09be\u09b0\u09cd\u099c\u09c0-\u09b0 \u09a6\u09c1\u09a7\u09c7\u09b2 \u0997\u09be\u0987\u09a6\u09c7\u09b0 \u09b6\u09c1\u09a7\u09c1 \u098f\u0995\u099f\u09be \u0985\u099c\u09c1\u09b9\u09be\u09a4\u09c7\u09b0 \u09aa\u09cd\u09b0\u09af\u09bc\u09cb\u099c\u09a8!” (Translation: Mamata Banerjee’s milch cows just need an excuse!) The first image in the collage (attached below) shows a skull-capped man throwing his arms up as a car is seen in flames in front of him. The text ‘Ganesh Chaturthi’ is superimposed on the image, implying that the violence took place in West Bengal during Ganesh Chaturthi.<\/p>\n

A reverse image search of this image led us to several news reports from December 2019. According to the reports, the photo shows a man agitating against the passing of the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB), which has now become the Citizenship Amendment Act, at Santragachi in Howrah district of West Bengal. The image has been attributed to news agency PTI.<\/p>\n

At the time, protests over the amended Citizenship Act were held in various parts of Bengal and sporadic incidents of violence were reported from Nadia, Birbhum, North 24 Parganas and Howrah districts, where agitators blocked thoroughfares, setting fire to tyres and wooden logs on the street and ransacked shops.
