After a video showing a male police officer slapping a female colleague on the back during a Congress rally in Rajasthan’s Churu went viral, police have claimed that the clip was edited.<\/p>\n

The Congress held a Halla Bol march<\/a> from the party’s block office to the collectorate in Churu on June 9 over various demands. A video of the rally, in which Congress MP from Churu Rahul Kaswan was present, soon went viral on social media. In the clip, DSP Sunil Jhajharia is seen slapping a female police officer hard on the back while seemingly asking her to follow him.<\/p>\n

The viral video caused a lot of outrage on social media with BJP MP from Nagaur, Hanuman Beniwal, calling it an insult to women power. He demanded the chief minister immediately suspend the errant police officer.<\/p>\n

According to media reports<\/a>, DSP Sunil Jhajharia claimed that what was being shown in the video was not true. He stated that since the woman constable was looking in the other direction, he called out to her and asked her to go to the front of the rally. When the woman constable did not hear him, he went close to her and asked her to go to the head of the rally. The DSP clarified that there was no incident of misbehaving.<\/p>\n

A Navbharat Times<\/a> report further stated that the policewoman had herself rejected the allegation against the DSP. Stating that the DSP had only asked her to go to the head of the rally, she refuted the claims that she had been misbehaved with. “A conspiracy is being hatched to malign me and the department’s image by distorting the video,” she told the media. The report also stated that the lady constable had filed a case against six people for sharing the video, many of whom were Congress workers.<\/p>\n

Was the Video Tampered with?<\/strong><\/h4>\n

We found the full video of the incident on the Facebook profile of local journalist Akhtar Mughal. Akhtar had gone to cover the Congress’ Halla Bol rally, and he was live on Facebook at the time of the incident. The act of DSP Sunil Jhajharia slapping the lady constable was captured on Akhtar’s Facebook live<\/a>. The Live video is 8-minute–46-second long, capturing the sequence of events from the Congress rally reaching the collectorate gate to submitting the memorandum. And there is no cut in this video. And since this is a live video, it is clear that there ae nom edits or tampering.<\/p>\n

It can be seen in the above video that as the rally reached the collectorate, several police personnel were present in the vicinity. Police stopped the protesters at the gate itself, but after a brief conversation, they opened the gate to let some people in. As some rally participants barged into the gated premises, policemen tried to close the gate and control the crowd. This is when DSP Sunil Jhajharia asked the lady constable to do something. And since she was looking in the other direction, she seemingly did not hear the DSP’s words. At this point, DSP Sunil Jhajharia slapped the female police officer hard on the back and asked her to go to the other side. The intensity of the slap can be gauged from the fact that it is actually heard in the video and the woman is seen pushed forward in its effect.<\/p>\n

The entire video was broadcast on Facebook live, and the incident of DSP Sunil Jhajharia hitting the woman comes at 2 minutes 47 seconds. Therefore, Rajasthan Police’s claim that the viral video is edited was false.<\/p>\n

Churu MP Refutes ‘Edited Video’ Claim<\/h4>\n

Reacting to the whole incident, Churu MP Rahul Kaswan slammed Churu police for lodging FIR against Congress workers. “In this digital age, it is common for Facebook live stream videos to be shared by the public. During one such live stream, a video of a Churu police officer slapping a female constable was seen; which was shared on social media by the media and the public. Since this was an internal matter of the police administration, we did not want to politicize the issue, but filing an FIR against Congress workers by the Churu police administration by calling the Facebook live video edited is completely against democratic values,” he tweeted.<\/p>\n
