Aamir, a truck driver from Haryana, was shot dead in an alleged confrontation with cow vigilantes linked to the Bajrang Dal in Rajasthan\u2019s Bhiwadi on March 2. Nearly two weeks later, his family says they are still running from pillar to post simply for police to act against those accused of killing him. Aamir, they insist, had nothing to do with cattle smuggling and was merely parked nearby when vigilantes chasing another vehicle crashed into his pickup.<\/p>\n

A resident of Utawad village in Haryana, 28-year-old Amir was brought dead to Bhiwadi Hospital in the early hours of March 2. According to his family, he had travelled around 15\u201316 kilometres that night to pick up another driver. The two had parked their pickup truck near a mosque to have Sehri when violence erupted on the road.<\/p>\n

Speaking to Alt News, Aamir\u2019s uncle Zubair said that a truck allegedly carrying cattle was being chased by vigilantes along the same stretch. In the chaos that followed, one of the pursuing vehicles rammed into Aamir\u2019s pickup.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe man who was with Aamir had stepped out and gone towards the mosque. Aamir was sitting inside the truck when the crash happened,\u201d Zubair said, alleging that the vigilantes, travelling in three vehicles \u2014 a Bolero and two camper vans \u2014 then opened fire.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen Aamir got down to enquire after the crash, they shot him. Once they realised that the vehicle did not belong to the cattle smugglers, they fled,\u201d he said. The truck allegedly carrying cattle escaped.<\/p>\n

Aamir worked as a truck driver transporting fruits and vegetables. He leaves behind a pregnant wife and a two-year-old daughter. Among six brothers, he was the eldest. His family also includes five sisters. Ironically, Aamir’s companion, Chhuttan from Taudu, who alerted the cops, is currently in police custody.<\/p>\n

Zubair recalled receiving a call around 7:30 am from his younger brother saying that Aamir had been detained. \u201cHe told me, \u2018bade wale ko pakad liye hai\u2019 (they have caught the elder one). I tried calling a constable I knew at the Bhiwadi police station, but he didn\u2019t pick up,\u201d Zubair said.<\/p>\n

When relatives in Chaupanki attempted to visit the police station, they were allegedly denied entry. A family acquaintance later learned that two men had been apprehended \u2014 one was in custody and the other had been shot and admitted to hospital.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen they (relatives) told me that the one in police custody was not our boy, I realised Aamir was the one who had been shot,\u201d Zubair said.<\/p>\n

Aamir\u2019s younger brother reached the hospital first and identified the body. \u201cHe called me crying and said, \u2018Bhai ko maar diya\u2026 They killed my brother. They are not even telling me anything here,\u2019\u201d Zubair recounted.<\/p>\n

An FIR has been registered under Section 302 against unidentified individuals. According to the family, they later tried to identify those involved by tracing the cattle smugglers through CCTV footage from a nearby petrol pump.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur son lost his life because of them. We had to find them,\u201d Zubair said. According to him, the men allegedly transporting cattle told the family that Bajrang Dal vigilantes had been chasing them from Rewari. They also mentioned that around 14\u201315 men were travelling in three vehicles. The family gave the names to police.<\/p>\n

Police say Aamir might have been Assisting Cattle Smugglers<\/h4>\n

Police officials have suggested that Aamir may have been linked to an alleged cattle-smuggling operation that was being pursued by vigilantes that night.<\/p>\n

According to an initial statement by deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Kailash Chaudhary, the Chaupanki police station received information around 5 am that a pickup truck carrying cattle was heading from Tapukda towards Tawadu and was being chased by a group of people.<\/p>\n

\u201cDuring a confrontation near Sare Kala village, stone-pelting occurred between the groups, in which Aamir was critically injured,\u201d DSP Chaudhary said. He was later taken to a hospital where doctors declared him dead.<\/p>\n

In a statement to The Observer Post<\/a>, Chaudhary said two vehicles were allegedly involved in the operation that night.\u00a0\u201cThere was a pickup truck and there was a camper laden with cattle. Aamir was in the pickup truck, which was filled with stones, and there was stone-pelting involved. Prima facie, it appears that the pickup truck may have been assisting the other vehicle in cattle smuggling,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Alt News also spoke to SP Prashant Kiran, who said two police teams had been formed to investigate the incident.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe FIR was registered against unidentified individuals because the complainant did not know the names of the accused,\u201d Kiran said, adding that arrests would be made after questioning suspects and establishing their role in the case.<\/p>\n

When asked whether those involved were affiliated with the Bajrang Dal, Kiran said this was still unclear.<\/p>\n

Reiterating the police\u2019s suspicion that Aamir may have been involved in the alleged smuggling attempt, the SP said the pickup truck in which he was found contained a large number of stones.\u00a0\u201cWhen vigilantes chase vehicles transporting cattle, another vehicle sometimes accompanies the main one and pelts stones to obstruct the pursuers and help the cattle truck escape. They create obstacles so that the main vehicle can get away,\u201d Kiran said.<\/p>\n

However, Kiran also acknowledged that Aamir had no prior criminal record related to cattle smuggling.<\/p>\n

Family Denies Smuggling Claim, Alleges Aamir was Shot<\/h4>\n

Aamir\u2019s family, however, strongly deny the police\u2019s suggestion that he was involved in cattle smuggling.<\/p>\n

According to his uncle, Yahya Khan, Aamir had simply gone out that night to pick up a driver in Rajasthan. At around 8 am on March 2, Aamir\u2019s mother and brother informed him that Aamir had been detained by the police.<\/p>\n

\u201cI went to the police station with a friend. That is when we were told that Aamir had died,\u201d Yahya said, alleging\u00a0that Aamir and the man accompanying him were mistakenly identified as cattle smugglers by vigilantes.<\/p>\n

\u201cSome people mistook Aamir and his friend for cattle smugglers. They rammed their vehicle and attacked them. Five to six rounds were fired. A bullet hit Aamir near his eye and he fell to the ground,\u201d Yahya told The New Indian Express.<\/p>\n

Family members said they suspected a gunshot injury when they first saw the body.\u00a0\u201cWhen we saw Aamir\u2019s head, we felt it was a bullet wound, not a stone injury,\u201d Aamir\u2019s uncle Zubair told Alt News. According to him, the police initially said the cause could only be confirmed after a post-mortem.<\/p>\n

Zubair said he insisted on being present during the autopsy along with a neighbour. \u201cWe were afraid something might go wrong if we weren\u2019t there. During the post-mortem, a bullet was recovered from Aamir\u2019s head. The DSP then came and took the bullet into his custody,\u201d Zubair claimed. According to him, the officer assured the family that the accused would be arrested after evidence was gathered.<\/p>\n

Aamir had been working extra shifts as a truck driver in recent weeks to support his family.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne of his sisters was to be married after Eid. Usually during Ramzan we stay home, but he had responsibilities. No one else in the family was earning,\u201d a relative told Alt News.<\/p>\n

Following Aamir\u2019s death, his family staged a protest outside the Chaupanki police station demanding action against those responsible.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have given the police the names of the accused, yet nothing has been done,\u201d a family member said. \u201cIf Aamir had been Hindu, they would have already detained several people for questioning. But in 10 days, no arrests have been made.\u201d<\/p>\n

The family said police had assured them that arrests would be made by March 13.\u00a0\u201cWe will wait until then,\u201d Zubair said. \u201cIf nothing happens, we will approach higher authorities. We will not let this go so easily.\u201d<\/p>\n
