With less than a month to go for the Assam assembly elections, chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma<\/span><\/span> has reiterated his stance on \u201cMiya Muslims\u201d while defending the Assam BJP\u2019s February 7 post on X in two back-to-back interviews. The post featured a controversial video showing Sarma appearing to \u201cshoot point blank\u201d at AI-generated images of two men in skullcaps, triggering a political storm.<\/p>\n

The term \u201cMiya\u201d is widely regarded as a pejorative for Bengali-origin Muslim communities in Assam, who have frequently been targeted by the BJP with allegations of land encroachment, demographic change, ‘Love Jihad’, child marriage, ‘Fertiliser Jihad’, and so on.<\/p>\n

The 18-second video combined real footage of Sarma handling an air rifle with AI-generated visuals of two bearded men in skullcaps being shot at. Captioned \u201cPoint blank shot,\u201d the post was later taken down, but the party did not issue any clarification or statement.<\/p>\n

On March 12, Sarma appeared at ‘Panchayat Aaj Tak’<\/span><\/span> organised by Aaj Tak<\/span><\/span> in Guwahati, and again on March 15 on ‘Power Play’<\/span><\/span> hosted by NDTV<\/span><\/span>. In both interviews, he was asked about the video and his remarks on \u201cMiya Muslims.\u201d The Assam CM defended the post, saying it would be re-uploaded with a \u201ccorrection\u201d to specify that the individuals depicted were \u201cBangladeshis.\u201d<\/p>\n

March 12: Panchayat Aaj Tak<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Himanta Biswa Sarma<\/span><\/span> appeared at Panchayat Aaj Tak<\/span><\/span> on March 12 in an interview conducted by Anjana Om Kashyap<\/span><\/span> and Kaushik Deka<\/span><\/span>. During the interaction, Kashyap raised Sarma\u2019s remarks on \u201cMiya Muslims,\u201d and referred to responses from the courts and AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi<\/span><\/span>. Sarma dismissed the claim, asserting that no high court or Supreme Court had commented on the issue and maintained that his statements were \u201clegally and constitutionally correct.\u201d<\/p>\n

Addressing the controversial video posted by the Assam BJP, Sarma said it was \u201cfine\u201d but should have explicitly mentioned \u201cBangladeshis.\u201d \u201cEverything else was fine,\u201d he said, adding that the post was deleted only because the omission made it \u201cconstitutionally and legally wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n

He further stated that the video would be corrected and re-uploaded, possibly from his personal handle. When Kashyap questioned the optics of a chief minister appearing to \u201cshoot\u201d individuals, Sarma responded that it was symbolic and could imply the use of non-lethal means such as rubber bullets.<\/p>\n

Kashyap also questioned Sarma over his remarks suggesting people pay less to \u201cMiya Muslim\u201d rickshaw pullers. Sarma defended the statement saying he was kind enough not to call for their social boycott. \u201cWhich Assamese person cannot differentiate between a Bangladeshi and an Assamese person\u2026 they might be able to show documentation, but that is not enough. This is what I am fighting,\u201d Sarma said, adding that such documents could be forged, allegedly with the help of activists like Harsh Mander<\/span><\/span>. He also described his earlier remark about paying less to \u201cMiya Muslims\u201d as \u201cmetaphorical,\u201d saying it was intended to highlight what he claimed was the pressure faced by Assamese people.<\/p>\n

Despite pushback from both interviewers, Sarma maintained his position throughout the exchange.<\/p>\n

March 15: NDTV Power Play<\/h4>\n

On March 15, NDTV<\/span><\/span> aired a one-hour interview with Himanta Biswa Sarma<\/span><\/span> on Power Play<\/span><\/span><\/em>, featuring Rahul Kanwal<\/span><\/span>, Padmaja Joshi<\/span><\/span> and Manogya Loiwal<\/span><\/span>.<\/p>\n

At the 6:39-minute mark, Loiwal asked whether Sarma had an issue with \u201cMiya Muslims\u201d and if Muslims were safe in Assam. Sarma responded that the question was \u201ctwisted\u201d and denied having any issue with Muslims, saying, \u201cIndia is a secular nation. Everyone has equal rights.\u201d He added that his objection was to \u201cMiya,\u201d \u201cBangladeshi Muslims\u201d or \u201cghuspethiyan,\u201d not Muslims as a whole.<\/p>\n

To support his claim, Sarma said his driver of 30 years is a Muslim and that around 30% of his office staff are Muslims. \u201cMy problem is with Bangladeshis. No Indian can have sympathy for a Bangladeshi or a ghuspethi by the rule of the Constitution, by the parameter of law. Assam\u2019s war isn\u2019t against Muslims. It is against Bangladeshi Muslims,\u201d he said, drawing applause from the audience.<\/p>\n

At the 9:21-minute mark, Padmaja Joshi<\/span><\/span> raised the BJP\u2019s now-deleted video, referring to it as the one that was \u201cposted and deleted,\u201d and noting the absence of any mention of \u201cMiyas.\u201d Sarma immediately acknowledged a \u201cmistake,\u201d saying the video would be reposted with \u201cBangladeshis\u201d clearly specified. When Joshi pressed further\u2014\u201cAnd you will aim again? Point blank?\u201d\u2014Sarma responded, \u201cYes, one has to aim and hit the Bangladeshis. Point blank,\u201d framing it as part of a larger \u201cwar\u201d and warning of demographic change. The audience responded with laughter and applause.<\/p>\n

As Joshi attempted to cite criticism from the Congress, Sarma cut in, claiming that the Prime Minister, the Supreme Court, and the President\u2019s address echoed similar concerns about illegal immigration. He framed the issue as one of protecting India\u2019s demographic balance.<\/p>\n

Rahul Kanwal<\/span><\/span> then raised concerns about the geopolitical implications of such rhetoric, particularly for India\u2019s ties with Bangladesh. Sarma dismissed this, saying he would \u201cthink about Bangladesh later\u201d and focus on Assam first. He later moderated his stance slightly, suggesting the use of \u201crubber bullets\u201d instead of real ones, arguing that even police forces use such measures.<\/p>\n

Kanwal then told his colleague that in the video, Sarma was \u201cnot trying to shoot with real bullets but rubber bullets.\u201d Sarma reiterated that one should begin by using rubber bullets, drawing applause from the audience. Responding with a smile, Rahul Kanwal<\/span><\/span> remarked, \u201cArre baapre! Ye toh aapne ekdum mafiya style dhamki de di hain\u201d (Oh my God! You\u2019ve just given a full-on mafia-style threat). Sarma continued to justify his position, arguing that the Constitution permits such action by border security forces.<\/p>\n
