It was retweeted over 1400 times and &#8216;liked&#8217; over 1800 times.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Congress exposed<\/p>\n<p>The entire Lingayat &amp; Veerashaiva community division was planted under direct instruction of Sonia Gandhi<\/p>\n<p>The letter written to Sonia Gandhi by Congress leader MB Patil exposes shocking details of how Sonia Gandhi wanted to divide Hindu communities in Karnataka <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/ZC6CpQf1fN\">pic.twitter.com\/ZC6CpQf1fN<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 BJP Karnataka (@BJP4Karnataka) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BJP4Karnataka\/status\/1117996079436451841?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 16, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>An excerpt from this letter is quoted below.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The unanimous opinion is that in order to win the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, it is essential to curb the RSS growth in Karnataka and defeat BJP in the 2018 Assembly elections. This can be achieved by uniting the Muslims and Christians on the basis of their faith; divide the Hindus on the basis of caste\/sub-caste and sect and sub\/sect.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-33487\" src=\"http:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2019\/04\/letter-sonia-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2019\/04\/letter-sonia-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2019\/04\/letter-sonia-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2019\/04\/letter-sonia.jpg 900w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/p>\n<h4><strong>Fake letter, previously debunked by Alt News<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The same &#8216;letter&#8217; had circulated widely ahead of the assembly election in Karnataka in May 2018. The fake news website Postcard News had even published an article based purely on this fake letter. The article was, expectedly, <a href=\"https:\/\/postcard.news\/massive-expose-karnataka-minister-m-b-patils-letter-to-sonia-gandhi-reveals-that-global-christian-council-and-world-islamic-organisation-masterminded-the-division-of-lingayats-in-karnataka\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">later deleted<\/a> and so was Postcard News founder <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mvmeet\/status\/994621601969618947\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mahesh Vikram Hegde&#8217;s tweet<\/a> regarding the same.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-33489\" src=\"http:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2019\/04\/postcardletter-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"513\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2019\/04\/postcardletter-1.jpg 513w, https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2019\/04\/postcardletter-1-300x292.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 513px) 100vw, 513px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The letter is fake. Not only are the language and contents a dead giveaway, but a quick Google search also reveals that \u2018Global Christian Council\u2019 and \u2018World Islamic Organisation\u2019, organisations with which the Congress has supposedly schemed to politically divide the state, do not even exist. The names of the organisations are a figment of imagination.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, M B Patil, in a conversation with Alt News had confirmed that the letter is fake. Alt News&#8217; earlier fact-check can be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/postcard-news-circulates-fake-letter-about-sonia-gandhi-and-karnataka-minister-engineering-lingayat-issue\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">read here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Republic TV published article on the fake letter, later deleted<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The English news channel Republic TV initially reported about this letter, publishing an article with the words &#8220;SENSATIONAL: BJP shares purported Congress&#8217; 2017 strategy letter addressed to Sonia Gandhi pitching explosive caste and religion divide and conquer plan&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-33502\" src=\"http:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2019\/04\/republic_letter.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"586\" height=\"432\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2019\/04\/republic_letter.jpg 586w, https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2019\/04\/republic_letter-300x221.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2019\/04\/republic_letter-74x55.jpg 74w, https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2019\/04\/republic_letter-111x83.jpg 111w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 586px) 100vw, 586px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The article is now <a href=\"https:\/\/www.republicworld.com\/election-news\/karnataka-lok-sabha-elections\/sensational-bjp-shares-purported-congress-2017-strategy-letter-addressed-to-sonia-gandhi-pitching-explosive-caste-and-religion-divide-and-conquer-plan?v=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">no longer on the website<\/a>. A little later, Republic TV <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/RepublicWorld\/videos\/2244540092426625\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">updated their reportage<\/a> with the word &#8216;fake&#8217; to describe the letter. It may be noted that this was in the nature of an update, and not a clarification or an acknowledgement of error.<\/p>\n<p>With assembly elections in five states underway, such recirculation of previously bunked information is to be expected.
