Readers may note that the instances listed below are in no particular order.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Misinformation via political parties and leaders<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>It is not uncommon to see misinformation float on social media, but when it emanates from the formal political system, it becomes an even greater cause for concern.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>1. False claim by PM Modi on Congress&#8217; 2019 challenge<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>In the much hyped interview given to <em>India Today\u00a0<\/em>in April 2019,\u00a0 Prime Minister Narendra Modi asserted that the people of the country must be made aware of one crucial fact- the Congress party is contesting the lowest number of seats ever in the history of general elections.The relevant portion can be heard from 1:03:45 in the video posted below.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"PM Narendra Modi&#039;s Unforgettable &amp; Exclusive Interview With India Today | Full Interview\" width=\"1290\" height=\"726\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/DQ-op3h3yBI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Alt News found that PM Modi&#8217;s claim was factually incorrect. Congress party is contesting the election from 424 seats in this election. This is not the lowest tally ever. In 2004, the INC had fought on 417 seats. The photograph on the left is that of Nazi leader Adolf Hitler, whereas the one on the right is of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">What are your thoughts? <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/b8GcgKL2ih\">pic.twitter.com\/b8GcgKL2ih<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Divya Spandana\/Ramya (@divyaspandana) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/divyaspandana\/status\/1122754198100172805?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 29, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The same image had been circulated by detractors of Narendra Modi in 2018 as well. It was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/hitker-modi-photoshopped-image-child\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">debunked<\/a> by Alt News.\u00a0A reverse image search on Google revealed that Hitler\u2019s image used in the post is photoshopped. In the original image, he is not holding the child\u2019s ears but resting his hands on her shoulders. Haryana CM targets Rahul Gandhi via clipped video<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>On April 28, Haryana chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar addressed an election rally in Ratia in the state. During his speech, the CM spoke about a purported video of Rahul Gandhi which was \u201ctoo difficult to even talk about\u201d. Khattar alleged that the Congress president \u201cinsulted the honour of our mothers and sisters\u201d. A 7-year-old speech of Rahul Gandhi in UP\u2019s Phulpur was lifted, clipped and circulated on social media.In the original speech, Rahul Gandhi talks about Janani Suraksha Yojna under the National Rural Health Mission, where pregnant women get an incentive of Rs 1,400 for institutional delivery. In that context, the Congress president claimed that according to an RTI response, women with the same name were getting incentives every week due to corruption in the scheme. Congress leader Ajay Maken targets Amit Shah with clipped video<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><em>Its very strange-BJP President Sh Amit Shah himself says that do not vote for Meenakshi Lekhi! Then why should anyone vote for Lekhi ji?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>With the above message, Congress leader from Delhi Ajay Maken tweeted a video on May 2 of BJP president Amit Shah speaking at a rally. The video clip is 18 seconds long. In it, Amit Shah can be heard appealing to the audience not to vote for the two BJP candidates present on the dais- Meenakshi Lekhi and Ramesh Bidhuri.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Its very strange-BJP President Sh Amit Shah himself says that do not vote for Meenakshi Lekhi!<\/p>\n<p>Then why should anyone vote for Lekhi ji?<\/p>\n<p>Please watch this video sent by <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Kundra_Vishal?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@Kundra_Vishal<\/a> \ud83d\udc47 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/VaRXUBbiXA\">pic.twitter.com\/VaRXUBbiXA<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Ajay Maken (@ajaymaken) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ajaymaken\/status\/1124008402122883078?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 2, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The video clip of Amit Shah has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/did-amit-shah-exhort-crowd-to-not-vote-for-meenakshi-lekhi-ajay-maken-tweets-clipped-misleading-video\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">mischievously edited<\/a> and taken out of context, to make it seem as if Shah is bizarrely appealing to the crowd to not vote for his own party candidates! The BJP president was appealing to the crowd to vote for the BJP candidates, not for the supposedly stupendous work done by the Modi govt, but on the issue of national security. One bit from this video was mischievously edited, and shared by no less than a senior leader like Ajay Maken. The tweet has still not been deleted.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>5. Boxer Vijender Singh tries to \u2018expose\u2019 mohalla clinics, but reaches 40 minutes late<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Celebrated boxer Vijender Singh, who recently joined the Congress party, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/boxervijender\/status\/1120978326103953408\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">tweeted<\/a> a live video on April 24. Singh broadcast the video via his Twitter account, as he paid a visit to a mohalla clinic in Delhi. The mohalla clinic turns out to be locked, and Singh can be heard criticizing the AAP government.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"und\"><a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/KdAOsWHvy6\">https:\/\/t.co\/KdAOsWHvy6<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Vijender Singh (@boxervijender) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/boxervijender\/status\/1120978326103953408?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 24, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The pugilist turned politician was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/boxer-vijender-singh-tries-to-expose-mohalla-clinics-but-he-is-40-minutes-late\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">probably unaware<\/a> that the timing of the mohalla clinics is from 8 am to 2 pm. Singh reached the clinic at 2:40 pm and obviously found it locked.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>6. Bengal BJP doctors video to claim Mamata Banerjee asked people to vote for BJP<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><em>\u201cThe impact of MODI TSUNAMI \u2013 Mamata Banerjee appeals everyone to vote for BJP!\u201d<\/em>\u00a0\u2013 the official twitter handle of BJP Bengal declared in a tweet that the Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Bannerji, appealed to vote for BJP in a rally. Accompanying the tweet was a short 18-second video in which her words \u2013\u00a0<em>\u201cBJP shorkar ke vote diye\u201d \u2013\u00a0<\/em>were played in a loop. The English translation of the statement is \u2013\u00a0<em>\u201cvote for BJP\u201d.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">The impact of MODI TSUNAMI &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MamataOfficial?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@mamataofficial<\/a> appeals everyone to vote for BJP! The first time she&#8217;s made any sense during this election campaign! Thanks a ton DIDI !! <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Os6PxdF9GS\">pic.twitter.com\/Os6PxdF9GS<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 BJP Bengal (@BJP4Bengal) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BJP4Bengal\/status\/1120712814065270784?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 23, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It turns out that BJP Bengal had tweeted a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/bjp-bengal-doctors-video-to-claim-mamata-banerjee-asked-people-to-vote-for-bjp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">doctored video<\/a>, which was clipped and played in a loop to give a misleading impression. Mamata Banerjee addressed a rally in Khanakul, West Bengal on April 23. While ending her speech, Banerjee asked the people to vote out BJP, with a sarcastic tone to her words. Banerjee\u2019s words \u201c<em>6 May aasche din, ekhane bhalo kore gonotontroye BJP Sarkar ke vote diye bhalo kore kobor din, bhalo kore kobor din, bhalo kore kobor din<\/em>\u201c, can be approximately translated as follows:<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>On May 6, cast your vote for BJP government and give them a proper burial, give them a proper burial, give them a proper burial<\/em>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The part where Banerjee says \u201c<em>bhalo kore kobor din<\/em>\u201c, which literally translates to \u201c<em>put them in the grave<\/em>\u201c, was clipped out by BJP Bengal. Instead, the part where Banerjee sarcastically says \u201c<em>vote for BJP<\/em>\u201d was retained and played in a loop.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>7. AAP social media head tweets 2013 video to portray Congress on shaky ground in Delhi<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><em>People of Delhi have understood that @INCIndia and @SheilaDikshit are merely vote-cutters. If you dont believe it then watch this 24 second video. After today\u2019s #AAPkaManifesto, the 2-3% people who would have voted for Congress will now not. (translation).<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The above message has been tweeted by Ankit Lal, the social media in-charge of the Aam Aadmi Party, along with a short video clip showing former Delhi CM and senior Congress leader Sheila Dikshit. It is not a recent news report. It is from November 2013. <em>NDTV<\/em>\u00a0had<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ndtv.com\/delhi-news\/at-least-stay-for-rahul-gandhis-speech-sheila-dikshit-pleaded-at-delhi-rally-541437\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u00a0reported<\/a>\u00a0on the turnout at the Congress party\u2019s rally in Ambedkar Nagar, ahead of the 2013 assembly election which took place in December that year. INC was the biggest loser in the election, plunging from 43 seats to 8.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>8. Paresh Rawal tweets previously debunked newspaper clipping<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>BJP MP and actor Paresh Rawal retweeted a purported newspaper clipping (<a href=\"http:\/\/archive.is\/g90rZ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">archive<\/a>) according to which an Indian politician was arrested in Boston airport for possession of drugs. The politician was a son for a former prime minister, claimed the alleged clipping dated \u2018September 30, 2001\u2019.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Well I know and all should know ! <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Q1intlelge\">https:\/\/t.co\/Q1intlelge<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Chowkidar Paresh Rawal (@SirPareshRawal) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SirPareshRawal\/status\/1118711651912445953?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 18, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The newspaper clipping shared by Rawal is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/bjp-mp-paresh-rawal-tweets-previously-debunked-fake-newspaper-clipping\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">fake <\/a>and was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/rbi-director-gurumurthy-tweets-manufactured-newspaper-clipping-deletes-later\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">debunked<\/a> by Alt News earlier when RBI director S Gurumurthy had tweeted it. The clipping was created on a website <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fodey.com\/generators\/newspaper\/snippet.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">fodey.com<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>that gives one an option to write a story, give it a headline, name the newspaper and change the date.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>9. BJP falsely claims author of TIME&#8217;s critical cover story on Modi is a Pakistani<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>TIME&#8217;s article on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, titled &#8216;India&#8217;s divider-in-chief&#8217; was written by Aatish Taseer. The Bharatiya Janata Party, dismissing the critique, said that the article must not be given importance as it was written by a Pakistani author. This was said by BJP president Amit Shah, and reiterated by party spokesperson Dr. Sambit Patra.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Shri Amit Shah&#039;s interview on Times Now : 13 May 2019\" width=\"1290\" height=\"726\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3EX7zF69hGk?start=501&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The BJP&#8217;s assertion that Aatish Taseer ,the author of the piece is a Pakistani, is false. Taseer is a British national and not a Pakistani. Alt News&#8217; article on this may be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/no-author-of-times-cover-story-on-pm-modi-is-not-a-citizen-of-pakistan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">read here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Fake newspaper clips and TV news screenshots<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3>1. Fake newspaper clipping claims PM Modi\u2019s family blames him for his father\u2019s death<\/h3>\n<p>A clipping that had been floating on social media the last few years resurfaced this election season. It talks about Prime Minister Narendra Modi and alleged incidents from his childhood. <em>\u201c\u092e\u094b\u0926\u0940 \u0915\u0947 \u092d\u093e\u0908 \u092c\u0939\u0928 \u0928\u0930\u0947\u0902\u0926\u094d\u0930 \u092e\u094b\u0926\u0940 \u0915\u094b \u0939\u0940 \u0905\u092a\u0928\u0947 \u092a\u093f\u0924\u093e\u091c\u0940 \u0915\u0947 \u092e\u094c\u0924 \u0915\u093e \u091c\u093f\u092e\u094d\u092e\u0947\u0926\u093e\u0930 \u092e\u093e\u0928\u0924\u0947 \u0939\u0948\u00a0 (Modi\u2019s brothers and sister blame Narendra Modi for their father\u2019s death),\u201d\u00a0<\/em>the clipping is headlined.<\/p>\n<p>It says that PM Modi\u2019s father, Damodardas Mulchand Modi, used to make ends meet by pickpocketing and stealing coal and iron from the railway station where he worked as a tea seller. He traded the stolen items for gold, which, in turn, were stolen by Narendra Modi when he was a young boy. His father, unable to cope with his son\u2019s actions, suffered a cardiac arrest. The family could not get back the stolen gold despite lodging an FIR and Damodardas Mulchand Modi subsequently died because his family could afford the medical expenses. It has been claimed that the picture was taken in Kerala. In the image on the right, Mrs. Gandhi is sporting a <em>rudraksha<\/em> necklace. This photo was claimed to be from Uttar Pradesh. It was claimed that the visuals of gun-toting men were from Purulia district in West Bengal. Some of the outlets even went a step further by alleging that the men were,\u00a0<em>\u201cTMC workers\u201d<\/em>.
