The media outlet claimed that it<em> &#8220;witnessed the police opening fire and using tear gas to disperse the crowd. Despite that, the Indian government has said the protest never took place.&#8221;\u00a0<\/em><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/watch\/?v=1201482526698930\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BBC Punjabi<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>claimed that live rounds were also fired at the protestors.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Tear gas at Kashmir rally India denies happened - BBC News\" width=\"1290\" height=\"726\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Nica1EKi2h8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><em>Al Jazeera\u00a0<\/em>had also reported about the massive agitation in Srinagar where a large crowd defied government orders of a lockdown. The organisation said that the protestors were met with live fire, tear gas and rubber-coated steel bullets.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Analysis: Indian troops fire tear gas as mass protests erupt in Srinagar\" width=\"1290\" height=\"726\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/SEWWZsLkKeE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>According to <em><a href=\"https:\/\/in.reuters.com\/article\/india-kashmir\/some-signs-of-normality-return-to-kashmir-but-indias-clampdown-still-strict-idINKCN1V00N0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Reuters,<\/a><\/em> at least 10,000 had participated in the August 9 protest against the dilution of Article 370. The publication claimed to have spoken to a police source, an official source and eyewitnesses.<\/p>\n<p>Soon after these reports, the Home Ministry put out a statement claiming that the news suggesting 10,000 people protested in Srinagar is &#8220;fabricated and incorrect&#8221; and only a &#8220;few stray protests&#8221; were carried out where &#8220;not more than 20 people&#8221; were involved.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">A news report originally published in Reuters and appeared in Dawn claims there was a protest involving 10000 people in Srinagar.<\/p>\n<p>This is completely fabricated &amp; incorrect. There have been a few stray protests in Srinagar\/Baramulla and none involved a crowd of more than 20 ppl.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Spokesperson, Ministry of Home Affairs (@PIBHomeAffairs) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PIBHomeAffairs\/status\/1160081078486368256?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 10, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The Home Ministry has now clarified that widespread protests indeed took place in Soura, Srinagar.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Stories in media on a said incident in Soura region of <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Srinagar?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Srinagar<\/a>.<br \/>\nOn 09\/08, miscreants mingled with people returning home after prayers at a local mosque. They resorted to unprovoked stone pelting against law enforcement forces to cause widespread unrest.<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/diprjk?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@diprjk<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JmuKmrPolice?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@JmuKmrPolice<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Spokesperson, Ministry of Home Affairs (@PIBHomeAffairs) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PIBHomeAffairs\/status\/1161224075680931841?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 13, 2019<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>MHA&#8217;s clarification came three days after its earlier statement. The presence of this banner indicates that the footage is not old. Moreover, the Home Ministry itself has <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PIBHomeAffairs\/status\/1161224075680931841?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1161224075680931841&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026%2F%3Fp%3D43523\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">confirmed<\/a> that protests did take place.<\/p>\n<h3>Verification of location<\/h3>\n<p>There have been several claims on social media that the no protests erupted in Kashmir. Many others claimed that the unrest did not occur in India. However, several visual cues in the footage establish that the scenes were shot in Srinagar.<\/p>\n<h4>1. Jenab Saeb mosque<\/h4>\n<p>A mosque is visible from 1:31 to 1:57 in the <em>BBC<\/em> footage. However, due to the poor quality of the video, the board is not legible. Alt News contacted <em>BBC News\u00a0<\/em>and was sent stills from their raw footage where the board is more clearly visible. The &#8220;abrogation of Article 370&#8221; banners suggest that the unrest was sparked by the government&#8217;s recent decision to scrap J&amp;K&#8217;s special status and the large gathering of people proves that MHA&#8217;s earlier claim that not more than 20 people had agitated is incorrect. While <em>BBC&#8217;s<\/em> reportage claimed live rounds were fired to push back the crowd and the media organisation reiterated that they stand by their report, Alt News was unable to independently verify the same.
