1. No, Kerala college did not raise Pak flag; media publishes misleading reports<\/h3>\n
A piece of \u2018breaking\u2019 news that was published by several media outlets on August 31 informed that the Kerala police booked 30 students\u00a0(Times Now<\/em> reported 25 students) of Silver Arts College, Kozhikode, for allegedly waving the Pakistani flag during the college election campaign.<\/p>\n Apart from Times Now<\/em>, Times<\/a> of India<\/a>,\u00a0Deccan Chronicle<\/a>,\u00a0MyNation<\/a>,\u00a0OpIndia<\/a><\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Dainik Jagran<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>were other media outlets that carried similar reports claiming that the Muslim Student Front (MSF) raised the purported flag of Pakistan inside the college campus. It is noteworthy that the word \u201callegedly\u201d found no mention in the title of any of these stories. The same video was also tweeted by\u00a0CNBC Awaaz<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n Alt News’s’ fact check<\/a> found that the US Army band did play the Indian National Anthem, but it was during the concluding day of the Yudh Abhyas, a joint military training exercise of the Indian and US Army which was conducted at the Joint Base Lewis McChord, Washington.<\/p>\n On September 12, a RTO inspector in Bengaluru crashed his vehicle into an auto-rickshaw, seriously injuring the driver. Mirror Now<\/em>, the English news channel of the Bennett Coleman group,\u00a0reported the same day<\/a>\u00a0with the headline,\u00a0\u2018Drunk RTO inspector rams vehicle into autorickshaw; auto driver battling for life\u2019<\/em>. News9<\/em><\/a>, a regional news channel based in Karnataka, broadcast news of the accident with the words, \u2018Drunk RTO inspector rams car into auto\u2019 and \u2018Drunk driving menace\u2019.<\/p>\n Sections of media had clearly misreported<\/a> the incident. Alt News contacted the electronic city traffic police station, Bengaluru who confirmed that news of the accused being drunk is false.\u00a0\u201cThe person was not under the influence of alcohol. A breath analyzer was used by the traffic police to determine this.\u00a0<\/em>Sadly, RTO inspector Manjunath passed away a day after the incident.<\/p>\n On September 13, a few media outlets published a story titled \u2013\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s a sign that you\u2019re hiding real data: Rajan on Goyal faux pas\u201d.\u00a0<\/em>The story was on former RBI governor Raghuram Rajan\u2019s alleged response to the recent gaffe made by Railway Minister Piyush Goyal where he attributed the discovery of gravity to Albert Einstein instead of Isaac Newton.<\/p>\n IANS<\/em>\u00a0ran the original story and the syndicated feed was published by\u00a0ABP News<\/a>,\u00a0The Quint<\/a>,\u00a0The Economic Times<\/a>,\u00a0Outlook\u00a0<\/a><\/em>and\u00a0Caravan Daily<\/a>. The Economic Times\u00a0<\/em>later took down the story.<\/p>\n The tweet attributed to Rajan was posted by a parody account<\/a> dedicated to the Indian economist. The\u00a0handle<\/a> itself reveals this information in its bio. Raghuram Rajan is not on Twitter.<\/p>\n \u201cIndian-origin presidential candidate Tulsi Gabbard welcomes Narendra Modi on a visit to the US, apologises for not being able to join \u2018Howdy Modi\u2019 event\u201d,\u00a0<\/em>read the headline of an article published by\u00a0Firstpost<\/em><\/a>\u00a0which credited the story to news agency\u00a0Asian News International<\/em><\/a>\u00a0(ANI). <\/em>Several other media outlets including NDTV<\/a>,\u00a0The Statesman<\/a>,\u00a0The Fress Press Journal<\/a>, <\/em>and Moneycontrol<\/a><\/em> have also published articles where it is being claimed that Gabbard is the first Indian-origin woman candidate for the US presidential elections.\u00a0NDTV<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0The Fress Press Journal<\/em>\u00a0have credited their stories to\u00a0ANI<\/em>.<\/p>\n Alt News found<\/a> that the 37-year-old Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard is not of Indian-origin. She has herself publically clarified the same on\u00a0Twitter<\/a>\u00a0in October 2012. It was also\u00a0reiterated<\/a> by her in 2014. Moreover, according to an explainer published by\u00a0The Indian Express<\/em><\/a>, Gabbard was born into a family of American Samoan ancestry, which is native to the US State of Hawaii.<\/p>\n A 24-second video showing a baby found hidden inside a duffle bag was viral on social media. HGS Dhaliwal, an Executive Director of Security at the Airport Authority of India, had shared the video on September 15 with the caption \u2013 \u201cBaby Bagged!! For instance, one of the images was uploaded by NASA in 2008. Another was a wallpaper illustration for iPhone. A third was a poster of a movie, and so on.<\/p>\n The Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act 2019, which stipulates steep penalties for traffic violations, came into effect from September 1. Immediately thereafter, social media was flooded with numerous videos of confrontation between civilians and policemen. The result threw up an article by\u00a0Deccan Chronicle<\/em><\/a>, dated June 27, 2016, pertaining to the same incident. It was titled,\u00a0\u2018Watch: Uttar Pradesh cops fight over share of bribe, suspended\u2019<\/em>. The incident had occurred in Lucknow, UP. Obviously, the incident was unrelated to the new traffic regulations.<\/p>\n A photograph where PM Modi is walking in the midst of a group that welcomes the leader was shared on social media. Pakistani PM Imran Khan is seen crouching in the image. \u201cWhen Modiji entered in to the G-7 conferences hall, everyone assembled in the hall has given the standing welcome to him. One guy among them hides and was not able to either sit or stand. See his condition and find who..?\u201d,\u00a0<\/em>read the message attached with the image which attempted to take a jibe at Khan, who was apparently embarrassed by the welcome that PM Modi allegedly received at the recently held G7 conference in France.<\/p>\n With a simple reverse search on Google, Alt News found<\/a> that an\u00a0old image<\/a> from an event in Davos was photoshopped. Imran Khan is not there in the original image. An unidentified man\u2019s face was edited with the face of the Pakistani PM to show him crouching when PM Modi was welcomed with applause.<\/p>\n A photograph of West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee with union Home minister Amit Shah, was shared on social media and WhatsApp. In the picture, Banerjee and Shah are jointly holding what appears to be a white envelope with the words \u2018Jai Shri Ram\u2019 written on it.<\/p>\n The photograph of Mamata Banerjee and Amit Shah together, is photoshopped. This was confirmed by a simple reverse image search on Google, which revealed the original photograph, in which there does not seem to be any text on the envelope, unlike the words \u2018Jai Shri Ram\u2019 inscribed in the photoshopped image.<\/p>\n \u201cPicture of the year\u00a0\u270c\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Proud moment for every Pakistani\u00a0\u2764\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Indian may use Burnol for this pic\u201d.\u00a0<\/em>This message was posted on Facebook along with a photograph, showing Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan surrounded by a host of global political leaders who seem spellbound by him. US President Donald Trump is seen sitting to the right of Imran Khan, while President of Turkey Raccip Tayyip Erdogan flanks him to the left.<\/p>\n The photograph in question is photoshopped. Alt News had\u00a0fact-checked<\/a> it earlier when it was shared on social media with a different manipulation- Prime Minister Narendra Modi sitting in the centre, surrounded by other leaders. The original picture was clicked at the G20 summit in Hamburg, Germany in 2017.<\/p>\n A 42-second video clip showing a woman with open wounds on her neck and right cheek, with a mob at a distance seen apprehending the alleged perpetrator who knifed her, was shared on social media. The incident dates back to September 15, 2019, when a youth named Arvind Kumar knifed his alleged girlfriend suspecting she was having an affair with another man. Ajaz Khan had\u00a0tweeted<\/a>\u00a0a photograph of an injured man, claiming he is Abu Kamil, a Muslim teacher in Mahua, Bihar who was beaten up by a mob.
