This was followed by a nationwide uproar.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>FACT CHECK: NUMBER NOT FUNCTIONAL<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The mobile phone number which has been circulated by social media and WhatsApp users- 9833312222, was <a href=\"https:\/\/mumbaimirror.indiatimes.com\/mumbai\/other\/real-time-railway-helpline-for-women-launched-in-city\/articleshow\/46508984.cms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">launched in 2015<\/a> by Government Railway Police (GRP). The helpline however was<strong> restricted to Mumbai<\/strong>. The number could be used by railway commuters to send messages, pictures or videos related to the issue of women&#8217;s safety, via WhatsApp.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-52049\" src=\"http:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2019\/11\/nirbhaya2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"662\" height=\"575\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2019\/11\/nirbhaya2.jpg 662w, https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2019\/11\/nirbhaya2-300x261.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 662px) 100vw, 662px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Alt News found that the number is not functional. It is no longer possible to send messages on WhatsApp to this number, as it is not listed on the messaging platform. This was confirmed by Mumbai Railway Police.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-52136\" src=\"http:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2019\/11\/Screen-Shot-2019-11-29-at-12.02.05-PM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"813\" height=\"278\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2019\/11\/Screen-Shot-2019-11-29-at-12.02.05-PM.png 813w, https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2019\/11\/Screen-Shot-2019-11-29-at-12.02.05-PM-300x103.png 300w, https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2019\/11\/Screen-Shot-2019-11-29-at-12.02.05-PM-768x263.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 813px) 100vw, 813px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Instead, two WhatsApp helpline numbers have been listed on the website of <a href=\"http:\/\/mumbairlypolice.gov.in\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mumbai Railway Police<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-52085\" src=\"http:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2019\/11\/nirbhaya3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"359\" height=\"342\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2019\/11\/nirbhaya3.jpg 359w, https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2019\/11\/nirbhaya3-300x286.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 359px) 100vw, 359px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Insofar as Mumbai city is concerned, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mhpolice.maharashtra.gov.in\/Citizen\/MH\/Women.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">helpline number is 103<\/a>. This is applicable to Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and Thane. For the rest of Maharashtra, the helpline number is 1091.<\/p>\n<p>Readers may note the three-digit toll-free number &#8211; 181 which was <a href=\"http:\/\/thehindubusinessline.com\/news\/govt-launches-181-women-helpline-number-for-all-states\/article23091955.ece\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">launched in January 2013<\/a>, soon after the Nirbhaya case. Initially launched in Delhi, several states have now set up this number (181) as a women&#8217;s helpline. Another number exclusively for <a href=\"https:\/\/wcd.nic.in\/sites\/default\/files\/Revised%20WHL%20Scheme%20120716.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">women in distress<\/a> is 1091, again adopted by state governments across the country.\u00a0\u00a0Moreover, in the latest development, a <a href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/news\/politics-and-nation\/112-single-emergency-helpline-number-launched-in-india-here-are-all-the-details\/articleshow\/68059574.cms?from=mdr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">single emergency helpline number<\/a> (112) was launched this year, integrating the police (100), fire (101), health (108) and women&#8217;s helpline (1091) numbers.<\/p>\n<p>It may thus be noted that the phone number circulated by social media users as the &#8216;Nirbhaya helpline&#8217;, was launched in 2015 by Railway police and was limited to Mumbai. It is no longer operational.
