The photograph has been posted with the caption &#8216;<em>Detention camp (Assam)<\/em>&#8216;. The Citizenship Amendment Act, 2019 has led to widespread protests, particularly in the Northeast, over the provisions of the legislation which exclude illegal Muslim immigrants from eligibility for citizenship of India.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>FACT-CHECK<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Alt News found that the photograph is not recent. Reverse-searching the image on Google, we found an article published on a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eltiempo.com.do\/las-advertencias-de-una-psicologa-los-padres-para-que-hijos-no-salgan-delincuentes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dominican Republic<\/a> website <em>El Tiempo<\/em>, which contained a cropped version of the image. The article was dated February 15, 2019. According to the description, the photo depicts inmates at the La Romana prison in the Caribbean nation.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-53661\" src=\"http:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2019\/12\/assam3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"589\" height=\"627\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2019\/12\/assam3.jpg 589w, https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2019\/12\/assam3-282x300.jpg 282w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 589px) 100vw, 589px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We also found the image on <em>El Tiempo<\/em> in an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eltiempo.com.do\/como-pollos-en-jaula-esta-imagen-muestra-la-realidad-que-espera-los-delincuentes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">article<\/a> dated May 11, 2018, stating that the photograph is from the La Romana prison.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-53675\" src=\"http:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2019\/12\/assam4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"574\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2019\/12\/assam4.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2019\/12\/assam4-300x287.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The same image was also located on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/losmocanos\/photos\/a.10152932518400344\/10160269566210344\/?type=3&amp;theater\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Facebook page<\/a> of a media company\u00a0<em>LosMocanos\u00a0<\/em>in the Dominican Republic. The image was described as, <em>&#8220;Preventive jail of La Romana with a maximum capacity of 30 prisoners but currently holding 114. It is located in the courthouse of that city.&#8221;\u00a0<\/em>This post was made on April 7, 2019. Another media outlet based out of the country <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/www.QuisqueyanosDondeQuiera\/photos\/a.1605173593090231\/2086528138288105\/?type=3&amp;theater\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Quisqueyano Donde Quiera<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>had shared the image on the same date with the identical caption.<\/p>\n<p>Alt News found a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/franciscoalbuez\/status\/884152335244681216?s=19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">similar photograph<\/a> posted in July 2017, claimed to be of La Romana prison.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"es\">C\u00e1rcel preventiva de La Romana <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/lmDSwgB23p\">pic.twitter.com\/lmDSwgB23p<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Francisco Albuez (@franciscoalbuez) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/franciscoalbuez\/status\/884152335244681216?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 9, 2017<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>While Alt News could not independently ascertain the origin of the photograph, it has been online since at least April 2018 and according to reports, pertains to the La Romana prison in the Dominican Republic.
