New research has estimated that over 371 people have died, exceeding the count of the previous SARS outbreak, while more than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/new-study-estimates-75-000-people-in-wuhan-infected-with-coronavirus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">75,000<\/a> people have been infected just in Wuhan. Recently, three cases of CoV infection were confirmed in <a href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/news\/politics-and-nation\/third-coronavirus-case-reported-from-india\/articleshow\/73895001.cms?from=mdr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kerala<\/a> and three suspected cases were reported in <a href=\"https:\/\/qz.com\/india\/1792388\/three-suspected-cases-of-coronavirus-reported-in-delhi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Delhi<\/a>. Countries such as Russia have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-01-29\/who-to-mull-emergency-decree-death-toll-hits-169-virus-update\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">closed borders from China<\/a> to prevent the spread of this infection.<\/p>\n<p>The infection from CoV resembles other respiratory tract infections, hence can be hard to isolate from the common flu. It spreads from respiratory fluids such as coughs and sneezes, similar to influenza and other respiratory tracts\u2019 infections. The extent of the infection has ranged from a mild cough to severely sick and dying due to the infection. Common symptoms include cough, fever, shortness of breath (dyspnea), and occasional diarrhoea. Currently, there are no vaccines for this infection and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/about\/prevention-treatment.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">preventative measures<\/a> are best to contain the spread of the infection.<\/p>\n<h2>Claim:<\/h2>\n<p>The Government of India released an <a href=\"https:\/\/pib.gov.in\/PressReleasePage.aspx?PRID=1600940#.XjFgr6nEzK8.twitter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">advisory<\/a> via PIB on January 29, 2020.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Advisory to recess the symptoms of respiratory tract in possible Corona virus infected cases<\/p>\n<p>Read the detailed advisory:<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/hApX41NPx7\">https:\/\/t.co\/hApX41NPx7<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 PIB India (@PIB_India) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PIB_India\/status\/1222469216135106561?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 29, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em>\u201cAs per the Unani Practices the following Preventive Management Steps are suggested. Prepare decoction by boiling Behidana (Cydonia Oblonga) 3gm, Unnab Zizyphus (Jujube Linn) 5nos, Sapistan (Cordia Myxa Linn) 7nos in 1 litre water until it reduces to half. Store it in a bottle and take sips as and when required.<\/em> For prophylactic measures immune system need to be strengthened for this purpose Khamira Marwareed 3-5 gm once a day may be taken,\u201d advises the Ministry of AYUSH.<\/p>\n<h2>Verdict:<\/h2>\n<p>False<\/p>\n<h2>Fact-Check:<\/h2>\n<p>Alt News sci-checked each of the components in the claim within the Unani papers to evaluate if the claims of prophylactic, preventative measures for CoV, or any other respiratory infections, hold true.<\/p>\n<h4>Behidana (Cydonia Oblonga):<\/h4>\n<p>While no research data was found in human studies that could determine the efficacy of \u2018Behidana\u2019 either preventatively, or as a symptomatic treatment for CoV\/flu-like infections. There were several general pre-clinical and review papers of Behidana (Cydonia Oblonga).<\/p>\n<p>The most prominent one was a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/articles\/10.3389\/fphar.2016.00163\/full#B110\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">review article<\/a> from Pakistan by Ashraf and colleagues in 2016, that suggested the uses of \u2018Behidana\u2019 (Cydonia Oblonga) or Quince. We specifically searched for any research conducted on respiratory problems within this review paper. It claimed that Quince can treat respiratory tract disorders including cold sores, rhinitis and cough as per <a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/articles\/10.3389\/fphar.2016.00163\/full#B110\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nadkarni, 1976<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.se\/books\/about\/Handbook_of_Medicinal_Herbs.html?id=8AJkBmPDRUUC&amp;redir_esc=y\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Duke et al., 2002<\/a>, amongst many other diseases.<\/p>\n<p>Nadkarni, 1976 is the \u2018Indian Materia Medica book for Ayurvedic, Unani, allopathic, homeopathic, naturopathic and home remedies\u2019 that listed Quince, once, as a \u2018popular remedy\u2019 on page 1038, section 2079, under \u2018Pyrus Cydonia\u2019. Similarly, Duke et al 2002, is another \u2018handbook of medicinal herbs\u2019 by the American botanist James Duke, again devoid of any research data.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-58108 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2020\/02\/cd1cb268-9f16-430c-ad63-04cd59eba6b4.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"734\" height=\"402\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2020\/02\/cd1cb268-9f16-430c-ad63-04cd59eba6b4.png 734w, https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2020\/02\/cd1cb268-9f16-430c-ad63-04cd59eba6b4-300x164.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 734px) 100vw, 734px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Thus, there is no research for Behidana as an asymptomatic or preventative treatment for flu-like symptoms, only reviews with opinions that suggest it is a \u2018popular remedy\u2019.<\/p>\n<h4>Unnab Zizyphus (Jujube Linn):<\/h4>\n<p>We found one Unani <a href=\"https:\/\/pdfs.semanticscholar.org\/084e\/387d849d1f96915617a09c0526911742aa64.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">review article<\/a> in the \u2018World Journal of Pharmaceutical Research\u2019 that detailed the benefits of \u2018Unnab\u2019 (red date) in a concoction. The article was published by Talib and colleagues by Jamia Hamdard, School of Unani Medicine in 2017, and listed the benefits (or \u201cMawaq-e-Istemal\u201d) related to respiratory problems as below:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConstipation, Dry cough, Sore throat, Busoor (skin eruptions).[39, 40]\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When we checked the references, 39 and 40 quoted in the review papers, they did not turn out to be published research articles or book chapters based on Unani research. Thus, again, no research evidence was found that studied Unnab (red dates) for flu-like symptoms.<\/p>\n<h4>Sapistan (Cordia Myxa Linn):<\/h4>\n<p>We found a prominent <a href=\"https:\/\/pdfs.semanticscholar.org\/084e\/387d849d1f96915617a09c0526911742aa64.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">review article<\/a> that discussed the role of \u2018Sapistan\u2019 in symptomatic treatments for respiratory diseases by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/profile\/Ali_Al-Snafi\/publication\/313742890_The_Pharmacological_and_therapeutic_importance_of_Cordia_myxa-A_review\/links\/58a46b9d4585150402be67fe\/The-Pharmacological-and-therapeutic-importance-of-Cordia-myxa-A-review.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Al-Snafi (2016)<\/a> from Thi Qar University, Iraq. Studying the section on respiratory benefits, they claimed that Cordia Myxa relaxed the smooth muscles of the trachea in sheep and cited the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iasj.net\/iasj?func=article&amp;aId=25203\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Al-Bayaty (2008) paper<\/a>. Neither the review (2016) nor the 2008 paper referred to any human studies with symptoms of the respiratory tract, thus giving no researched evidence to support Sapistan as an effective symptomatic treatment for respiratory diseases.<\/p>\n<h4>Khamira Marwareed:<\/h4>\n<p>No studies were found assessing the role of \u2018Khamira Marwareed\u2019 for immune or respiratory function as claimed by the AYUSH advisory. However, some reviews suggested it could be cardio-protective, the evidence for which was not studied due to lack of relevance. Again, no evidence was found to suggest the efficacy of Khamira Marwareed in changing immune or respiratory functions.<\/p>\n<h2>Conclusion:<\/h2>\n<p>Thus, no scientific evidence as research data was found corresponding to the Unani herbs advised by the AYUSH Ministry that would help to back their claim on Unani formulations for preventative or symptomatic treatments for Coronavirus. We also checked the corresponding scientific names of these herbs in fruitless efforts for obtaining data in the evidence-based literature.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike the information provided in the advisory by the Government of India, Unani can provide neither symptomatic nor preventative treatment for CoV infections or any other respiratory tract diseases.<\/p>\n<h2>References:<\/h2>\n<p>Ashraf, M.
