This was after a CCTV video of police charging students with <em>lathis <\/em>inside a reading room went massively viral. The footage was handed over to the channel by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Delhi police. It was played as &#8216;authentic&#8217; clip and used to claim that students entered the reading room with stones in their hands.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Uncut Video Of Jamia Campus Violence, What Is The Real Truth?\" width=\"1290\" height=\"726\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/bTx0z7jK4cU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>A plethora of other news organisations carried the clip and claimed that the students had stones clasped in their hands. Among the English outlets were <em><a href=\"https:\/\/timesofindia.indiatimes.com\/videos\/city\/delhi\/students-seen-carrying-stones-in-fresh-video-of-jamia-library\/videoshow\/74162307.cms?utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_campaign=iOSapp&amp;utm_source=twitter.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Times of India<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=nAmVDe24FHc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mirror Now<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=_rXkG-WGtZ4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Republic Bharat<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=69U8wjmUlFY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Times Now<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=AkBAidihUKA&amp;t=869s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Quint <\/a><\/em>and\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/dna\/status\/1229244278569754624\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">DNA<\/a>.\u00a0<\/em>Some of the Hindi channels were\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=EJ9q5AumtEs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Zee News<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=6XVnLX2sJ7I\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Aaj Tak<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=1SPRdnHBdpE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">India TV<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=qGQ2o47mvGw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NDTV India<\/a> <\/em>and <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=RLu04ijpBd4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">News Nation<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Right-wing websites\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/OpIndia_com\/status\/1229261690342117382\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">OpIndia<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SwarajyaMag\/status\/1229043929741324288\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Swarajya<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>carried similar reports.<\/p>\n<h4>FACT-CHECK<\/h4>\n<p>The channel claimed that the student was carrying a stone each in both his hands. For the purpose of this fact-check, Alt News used a higher resolution video received from sources in Jamia. The video is of the same footage played by <em>India Today. <\/em>Alt News slowed down the video and watched it frame-by-frame. We found that the student was holding a wallet in one of his hands, and a flat object (possibly a phone) in the other.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Jamia CCTV footage of students entering the reading room - slow motion clip\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/392084259?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"960\" height=\"576\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Here is the sequence of events &#8211; the student enters the room with a wallet in his right hand and a linear object (possibly a phone) in his left hand. At about 10 seconds, he goes out of the frame and comes back at 17 seconds when his right hand is empty. The brown wallet is now visible in his left hand.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Wallet<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The wallet is visible in multiple frames, however, is most clear at the 1:22-minute mark when the student stretches out his arm.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-59053 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2020\/02\/wallet.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"684\" height=\"446\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2020\/02\/wallet.jpg 684w, https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2020\/02\/wallet-300x196.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2020\/02\/wallet-130x86.jpg 130w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 684px) 100vw, 684px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Another clear shot of the wallet can be seen at 2:27. If one notices carefully, the two brown flaps of the wallet are distinctly noticeable and the gap in between is darker &#8211; a shade of black.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-59050 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2020\/02\/Selection_17_02_2020_015.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"540\" height=\"697\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2020\/02\/Selection_17_02_2020_015.jpg 540w, https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2020\/02\/Selection_17_02_2020_015-232x300.jpg 232w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>A flat object\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The student holds a flat object in his other hand which could possibly be a mobile phone. It isn&#8217;t as distinctly noticeable as the wallet and users are advised to watch the complete video in loops to self-analyse. We will attempt to provide a clean screenshot however there are a few pointers worth mentioning &#8211; a stone would typically be irregularly shaped. The student who was portrayed as a stone-pelter was merely carrying a wallet in one hand and a flat object, possibly a mobile phone, in the other.
