In the past few weeks, multiple Twitter accounts impersonating prominent individuals have successfully amassed thousands of likes and retweets. Several people have fallen for these handles despite each of them carrying signs which hint at their dubiousness \u2014 absence of the ‘blue tick’ that verifies genuine accounts and controversial statements not reported by the media. This article will jot down a few of such accounts. We will elaborate on how a web of imposter accounts gained thousands of followers by first posing as important personalities, then posting a piece of misinformation designed to get a lot of eyeballs. In this process, they amplified each other.<\/p>\n

1. Mukesh Ambani<\/strong><\/p>\n

Twitter account @Realmukeshamban carries the word ‘real’ in the username to give it a sense of genuineness. Recently, the account had tweeted<\/a> in Hindi, “I am removing Shahrukh Khan from advertisements of Jio sim cards. What is your opinion? (\u092e\u0948\u0902 \u0905\u092a\u0928\u0940 Jio \u0938\u093f\u092e \u0915\u0947 \u090f\u0921 \u0938\u0947 \u0936\u093e\u0939\u0930\u0941\u0916 \u0916\u093e\u0928 \u0915\u094b \u0928\u093f\u0915\u093e\u0932 \u0930\u0939\u093e \u0939\u0942\u0901\u0964 \u0906\u092a\u0915\u0940 \u0915\u094d\u092f\u093e \u0930\u093e\u092f \u0939\u0948 \u092c\u0924\u093e\u0908\u092f\u0947!!)” The tweet drew over 10,000 likes and more than 50,000 retweets.<\/p>\n

Ambani does not have an official Twitter account. Moreover, media outlets would have reported had the businessman made such a statement.<\/p>\n

2. Another fake account impersonating Mukesh Ambani<\/strong><\/p>\n

A second account impersonating Mukesh Ambani made the same tweet regarding Shah Rukh Khan. The username of the account is @ambani_mukesh1<\/a> and its bio reads, “Reliance Industries.”<\/p>\n

3. Arnab Goswami<\/strong><\/p>\n

Two other accounts with Arnab Goswami’s name have lately garnered large numbers of likes and retweets. Ironically, both these accounts mention “parody” in their bios however, this did not stop people from falling for them.<\/p>\n

The first account is @ArnwMGoswami<\/a>. This account was earlier dedicated to Mukesh Ambani. This was found after going through its tweets.<\/p>\n

Another account that calls itself a parody account of Goswami had fooled several Twitter users. The username of this account is @GoswamiArnaw. This account had shared the misinformation<\/a> that Patanjali’s Coronil was approved by the AYUSH Ministry.<\/p>\n

Many users have referred<\/a> to the account holder as “sir” hinting that they think the handle belongs to Arnab Goswami.<\/p>\n

4. Sonu Nigam<\/strong><\/p>\n

A user posing as singer Sonu Nigam (@Realsonu_nigam) also posted a tweet against Shah Rukh Khan. He wrote, “It is our request to Jio’s owner Mukesh Ambani to remove Shah Rukh Khan from ads other we Indian will remove Jio sim card. (Jio \u0915\u0947 \u092e\u093e\u0932\u093f\u0915 \u092e\u0941\u0915\u0947\u0936 \u0905\u0902\u092c\u093e\u0928\u0940 \u0938\u0947 \u0939\u092e\u093e\u0930\u0940 \u092a\u094d\u0930\u093e\u0930\u094d\u0925\u0928\u093e \u0939\u0948\u0902 \u0936\u093e\u0939\u0930\u0941\u0916 \u0916\u093e\u0928 \u0915\u094b \u0905\u092a\u0928\u0940 \u0910\u0921 \u0938\u0947 \u0928\u093f\u0915\u093e\u0932\u094b \u0935\u0930\u094d\u0928\u093e \u0939\u092e \u0939\u093f\u0902\u0926\u0941\u0938\u094d\u0924\u093e\u0928\u0940 \u0905\u092a\u0928\u0947 \u092e\u094b.\u0938\u0947 Jio \u0938\u093f\u092e \u0928\u093f\u0915\u093e\u0932 \u092b\u0947\u0902\u0915 \u0926\u0947\u0917\u0947..)”<\/p>\n

Interestingly, all these fake accounts sharing tweets against Shah Rukh Khan seems to be interlinked. The person handling Nigam’s fake account tweeted a picture of the singer and wrote, “Finally I joined Twitter.” This was retweeted by @RealMuskeshAmbani.<\/p>\n

If one tries to access the homepage of @Realsonu_nigam, Twitter shows a message of caution citing “unusual activity”.<\/p>\n

5. Kangana Ranaut<\/strong><\/p>\n

An account that used to pose as the handle of Republic TV’s Arnab Goswami later changed its username and profile picture to impersonate Bollywood actor Kangana Ranaut. Its initial username was @Arnab52222 which was altered to @Kangana_Ra<\/a>. Below are screenshots of the same tweet by the handle which claim that the AYUSH Ministry had approved Patanjali’s Coronil.
