Photos and videos of the flooding are being widely shared across social media. A Twitter user <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Delhiite_\/status\/1288744611137982465?s=19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">posted<\/a> an image published on the Hindi daily Hindustan. &#8220;This is a picture of Bandra&#8217;s Sakri-Chandpura area. This family has been living like this for a week in this village-turned-island,\u201d read the tweet. Another user <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/KadirAzam3\/status\/1288142160227753984?s=19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">shared<\/a> the image claiming it depicted the recent Bihar floods.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Due to flood, the family has been living like this for a week. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Bihar?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Bihar<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/ni29j1ORNU\">pic.twitter.com\/ni29j1ORNU<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 \u0632\u0645\u0627\u06ba (@Delhiite_) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Delhiite_\/status\/1288744611137982465?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 30, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The image was published on the <a href=\"https:\/\/epaper.livehindustan.com\/imageview_224249_118556010_4_102_30-07-2020_3_i_1_sf.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">third page<\/a> of the Muzaffarpur edition of Hindustan dated July 30, 2020, with the headline, &#8220;Flood threatens SKMCH.&#8221; We noticed that apart from the image caption, the family finds no mention in the article.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-72191 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2020\/08\/hindustan-times-e-paper.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"570\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2020\/08\/hindustan-times-e-paper.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2020\/08\/hindustan-times-e-paper-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2020\/08\/hindustan-times-e-paper-768x428.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2020\/08\/hindustan-times-e-paper-215x120.jpg 215w, https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2020\/08\/hindustan-times-e-paper-990x551.jpg 990w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<h4>Fact-check<\/h4>\n<p>A reverse image search led to various links, including a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalcitizen.org\/de\/content\/when-water-is-the-enemy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2015 Global Citizen article<\/a> suggesting that the photo was from Bangladesh. Therefore, an image that has been on the internet since at least 2015 was published in the newspaper as the recent Bihar floods.<\/p>\n<p>The image was also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.permaculturenews.org\/2014\/04\/25\/sandbar-cropping-bangladesh\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">published<\/a> in 2014 on a website called &#8216;Permaculturenews.org&#8217; which wrote an article on sandbar cropping in Bangladesh. The picture is credited to Shiree (Stimulating Household Improvements Resulting in Economic Empowerment), an organisation working with Practical Action in Bangladesh.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-72192 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2020\/08\/sandbar-cropping.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"918\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2020\/08\/sandbar-cropping.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2020\/08\/sandbar-cropping-300x269.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2020\/08\/sandbar-cropping-768x689.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2020\/08\/sandbar-cropping-990x888.jpg 990w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Practical Action is an international NGO working to uplift the poor in developing countries. It has worked extensively in Bangladesh as well. Shiree is a government organisation in Bangladesh. Based on this information, we searched for the image on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shiree.org\/photo-gallery\/#.XyLYqJ4zY2w\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Shiree&#8217;s website<\/a>. Its &#8216;Media&#8217; section carried a Flickr link with all the images of Shiree&#8217;s work. Here, we found an album titled &#8216;Practical Action, Bangladesh (PAB)&#8217; with 272 photos.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-72193 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2020\/08\/2020-07-30-20_10_12-EEP-shiree\u2019s-albums-_-Flickr.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"386\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2020\/08\/2020-07-30-20_10_12-EEP-shiree\u2019s-albums-_-Flickr.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2020\/08\/2020-07-30-20_10_12-EEP-shiree\u2019s-albums-_-Flickr-300x113.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2020\/08\/2020-07-30-20_10_12-EEP-shiree\u2019s-albums-_-Flickr-768x290.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2020\/08\/2020-07-30-20_10_12-EEP-shiree\u2019s-albums-_-Flickr-990x373.jpg 990w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This album also contained the image in question. According to its <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shiree.org\/practical-action-bangladesh-pab\/#.XyLMd54zY2y\">website<\/a>, this was done in two phases &#8211; from April 2009 to March 2012, then between April 2015 and December 2015.<\/p>\n<p>Hindustan published an image from Bangladesh that was at least nine years old as a flooded village in Bihar. Several reports state that houses in Bandra submerged due to the flooding in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.livehindustan.com\/bihar\/muzaffarpur\/story-bagmati-devastation-in-bandra-fear-of-leakage-in-budhi-gandak-dam-3384185.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bagmati<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jagran.com\/bihar\/muzaffarpur-ring-dam-of-budhi-gandak-river-broken-in-bandahi-of-bandra-hundreds-of-houses-submerged-20564731.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Burhi Gandak<\/a> rivers. ETV Bharat <a href=\"https:\/\/www.etvbharat.com\/hindi\/bihar\/state\/gopalganj\/flood-victims-living-on-the-roof-of-house-in-gopalganj\/bh20200730135529361\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reported<\/a> that many families in Gopalganj&#8217;s Bagheji village were forced to take shelter on higher ground and roofs due to lack of administrative assistance.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Conditions in northern Bihar remain grim due to the recent floods.
