Kolkata metro is the oldest metro transport system in the country. It commenced operations on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kmrc.in\/overview.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">October 24, 1984<\/a> when the first train rolled out of the Esplanade station to cover a distance of 3.4 kilometres to Bhowanipor.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-7441\" src=\"http:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2017\/12\/metroinauguration.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"674\" height=\"429\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2017\/12\/metroinauguration.jpg 480w, https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2017\/12\/metroinauguration-300x191.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 674px) 100vw, 674px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Designed to make travel smoother by transporting masses of people for short to medium distances at high frequency in urban and suburban spaces, the metro system also known as the subway, underground or the tube has been operational since the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/cities\/gallery\/2014\/sep\/10\/-sp-history-metro-pictures-london-underground-new-york-beijing-seoul\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">19th century<\/a> when the Metropolitan Railway (now part of The London Underground) opened in London in 1863.<\/p>\n<p>The Kolkata metro was conceived as the panacea to the ills of surface transportation in the city where roads accounted for a little over 4 percent of the surface area. A<a href=\"http:\/\/www.home.wb.gov.in\/BanglarMukh\/Download?FilePath=\/alfresco\/d\/d\/workspace\/SpacesStore\/7d5b24fe-ee2b-45bb-9ce0-8dec9dc0bf47\/Chap-Chapt1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> blueprint<\/a> was prepared in 1971 with the help of U.S.S.R and engineers from East Germany to construct five rapid transit lines in the city. The project was finally flagged off in 1984 after a decade of delays. In 2010, the Kolkata Metro became the 17th zone of the Indian Railways and is operated by the Ministry of Railways.<\/p>\n<p><strong>So what about Delhi metro?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In 1995, the Government of Delhi and the Government of India jointly set up a company, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.delhimetrorail.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Ltd<\/a> (DMRC). E.Sreedharan was appointed as the managing director of the joint venture. Construction began in 1998 and the metro was operationalised on December 24, 2002 when then PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tribuneindia.com\/2002\/20021225\/main3.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">inaugurated<\/a> the Red line of the metro from Shahdara to Tis Hazari. Earlier this month, Alt News <a style=\"font-size: 15px\" href=\"https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/pm-modi-travel-first-ever-seaplane-india-no\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">busted<\/a> the claim that PM Modi travelled in the first ever seaplane in the country. It has now become a routine affair for politicians to hog the limelight and take credit for big and important projects and indulge in hyperbole.
