Alt News performed a keyword search<\/a> and found a Hindustan Times article<\/a> dated November 26, 2020. According to the report, “A woman was shot in her foot when a beat constable, trying to settle a parking dispute in outer Delhi\u2019s Rohini, fired four rounds to the ground, one of which ricochetted off and hit her. Police said the constable had fired under duress as he was being manhandled by the family that was involved in a parking dispute with an elderly couple late Wednesday.”<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have registered a case against the attackers under Indian Penal Code sections pertaining to assault on a public servant, preventing a public servant from performing his duty, causing hurt, theft (of the pistol and other items) and causing hurt during theft,\u201d said PK Mishra, deputy commissioner of police (Rohini). No case has been registered against the police constable, Punit Sharma, for opening fire.<\/p>\n

Amar Ujala’s November 26 report<\/a> identified the woman who had been shot as Madhu. It mentions that a medical examination of Sharma concluded that he was not intoxicated when the incident occurred.<\/p>\n

Alt News also reached out to Rohini DCP Pramod Kumar Mishra for more information. He told us, \u201cThere is no communal angle to this incident. The place where this incident occurred is a Hindu area. We had received a complaint and following this, a constable named Punit Sharma was sent to investigate. A family had a fight with an elderly couple and was very angry. They started snatching the constable’s gun and other belongings. This prompted Punit to fire his gun to defend himself and the elderly couple. It was during this altercation that one of the bullets hit the woman’s toe. The constable also filed a complaint against the attacker’s family. However, this is not a communal matter.” The DCP added that constable Punit Sharma was on duty.<\/p>\n
