(<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20201223085654\/https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/story.php?story_fbid=1118543615273778&amp;id=277890682672413\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Archive link<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Another Facebook page named &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/112836343574536\/posts\/230753178449518\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kanhaiya Kumar &#8211; Youthicon<\/a>&#8216; also shared the image and accompanying claim.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-83223 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2020\/12\/word-image-30.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"810\" height=\"687\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2020\/12\/word-image-30.jpeg 810w, https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2020\/12\/word-image-30-300x254.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2020\/12\/word-image-30-768x651.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 810px) 100vw, 810px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>So did Facebook user <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/story.php?story_fbid=1336069486752923&amp;id=100010496535551\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Manojsinh Parmar<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-83224 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2020\/12\/word-image-31.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"675\" height=\"709\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2020\/12\/word-image-31.jpeg 675w, https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2020\/12\/word-image-31-286x300.jpeg 286w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 675px) 100vw, 675px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The photo is viral on Facebook with the Hindi hashtag <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/hashtag\/%E0%A4%AC%E0%A4%BE%E0%A4%AA%E0%A5%82%E0%A4%B8%E0%A5%82%E0%A4%B0%E0%A4%A4%E0%A4%B8%E0%A4%BF%E0%A4%82%E0%A4%B9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">#\u092c\u093e\u092a\u0942\u0938\u0942\u0930\u0924\u0938\u093f\u0902\u0939<\/a> (#BapuSuratSingh).<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Fact-check<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>We performed a simple reverse image search and found a <a href=\"https:\/\/reecechaplin.wordpress.com\/2015\/10\/20\/indias-minority-hunger-strike-lasting-277-days-later-and-still-no-media-coverage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">blog post from October 20, 2015<\/a>\u00a0carrying the image. The man was identified in the post as 82-year-old human rights activist Bapu Surat Singh who had been on a hunger strike for 277 days. He was demanding the immediate release of political prisoners from minority communities, including Sikhs, who were behind bars despite having served their full sentences.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-83225 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2020\/12\/word-image-32.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"810\" height=\"764\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2020\/12\/word-image-32.jpeg 810w, https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2020\/12\/word-image-32-300x283.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2020\/12\/word-image-32-768x724.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 810px) 100vw, 810px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A Facebook page titled \u2018Bapu Surat Singh Khalsa &#8211; Sangharsh Jaari Hai\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/bapusuratsingh\/photos\/a.754198181339862\/878894615536884\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">shared this image on September 23, 2015<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-83226 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2020\/12\/word-image-6.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"810\" height=\"394\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2020\/12\/word-image-6.png 810w, https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2020\/12\/word-image-6-300x146.png 300w, https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2020\/12\/word-image-6-768x374.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 810px) 100vw, 810px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Sikh Relief &#8211; SOPW, a charity working for the civil rights of political prisoners, had also posted the image on their Facebook page <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/SikhReliefOfficial\/posts\/10153201880722081\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">on October 6, 2015<\/a>. It also shared <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/SikhReliefOfficial\/photos\/a.10150176630957081\/10153178130722081\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a second picture<\/a> of the activist on September 21, 2015. The report said that his son Ravi Indarjit Singh Gogi explained that his father&#8217;s condition had worsened considerably. He was taken to the hospital and given some injections following which did not remember that he was on a hunger strike. The reason that he was fed was due to his rapidly deteriorating health.<\/p>\n<p>On July 8, 2020, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sikh24.com\/2020\/07\/08\/wall-stands-tall-bapu-surat-singhs-peaceful-struggle-completes-2000-days\/#.X-H2dNIzbIX\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sikh news portal Sikh 24<\/a> reported that the senior citizen had completed 2,000 days of his peaceful hunger strike on July 7, 2020. It also mentioned that he had originally begun fasting on January 16, 2015, and was being monitored at Ludhiana&#8217;s DMC Hospital. We also found a YouTube video from April 25, 2015 which stated that his hunger strike was motivated by the fight for human rights.<\/p>\n<p>[youtube https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=_G3RjC2t7ew]<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, a 2015 picture taken during Punjab activist Bapu Surat Singh&#8217;s hunger strike for the release of political prisoners was recently shared in connection with the ongoing farmers&#8217; protests.
