Pradeep Narwal, the National Convenor of the Scheduled Castes Department of the Congress, was among those promoting this claim. Wikipedia has cited the British Library as the source. A reverse image search of the image on Wikipedia led us to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bl.uk\/onlinegallery\/onlineex\/apac\/photocoll\/k\/019pho000000124u00010000.html?_ga=2.155013244.57769555.1614847472-325264794.1614847472\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">British Library<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bl.uk\/onlinegallery\/onlineex\/apac\/photocoll\/k\/019pho000000124u00010000.html?_ga=2.155013244.57769555.1614847472-325264794.1614847472\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">British Library<\/a>, this picture shows a member of the Kaibartha, a community of Hindu fisherfolk who settled in East Bengal. The website does not mention where the image was taken or by whom. However, it is dated early 1860. The Kaibartha community was among the first settlers of Bengal.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-87665 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2021\/03\/word-image-2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"638\" height=\"910\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2021\/03\/word-image-2.png 638w, https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2021\/03\/word-image-2-210x300.png 210w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 638px) 100vw, 638px\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Thus the man is neither Banke Chamar nor Udaiya Chamar, but a tribal from a caste in the Eastern India.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Who were Banke Chamar and Udaiya Chamar?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>An article on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dalitdastak.com\/dalit-heroes-of-freedom-fighter-1912\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dalit Dastak<\/a> from August 2016 identifies Banke Chamar as a freedom fighter from Jaunpur (Uttar Pradesh). &#8220;Banke Chamar was the most prominent of the 18 revolutionaries who were declared rebels in the Jaunpur revolution of 1857. The British government had put out a reward of 50,000 for anyone who captured him dead or alive. In the end, he was arrested and given the death penalty,&#8221; read the report.<\/p>\n<p>We also found references to Banke Chamar in several books. These described him as a freedom fighter in the 1857 Rebellion. The book &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.co.in\/books\/edition\/Dalit_Freedom_Fighters\/0D-oQz3htaYC?hl=en&amp;gbpv=1&amp;dq=banke+chamar&amp;pg=PA23&amp;printsec=frontcover\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dalits and Memories of 1857<\/a>&#8216; states that Banke Chamar lived in Kuarpur village of Jaunpur\u2019s Macchli Shahar. After the revolution failed, Banke and 18 of his associates were hanged by the British government.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-87666 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2021\/03\/word-image-13.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"810\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2021\/03\/word-image-13.jpeg 810w, https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2021\/03\/word-image-13-300x185.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2021\/03\/word-image-13-768x474.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 810px) 100vw, 810px\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Similarly, Udaiya Chamar was also a freedom fighter. A 2016 article in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navodayatimes.in\/news\/national\/dalit-freedom-fighters\/13274\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Navodaya Times<\/a> states that in 1804, the loyalist and favourite of the Nawab of Chattari, Udaiya Chamar got wind that the British were up to no good with their policies. He killed many of their men. In 1807, the British captured Udaiya and hanged him. He is also mentioned in many books available on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.co.in\/books\/edition\/Dalit_Studies_in_Higher_Education\/b_CeAAAAMAAJ?hl=en&amp;gbpv=1&amp;bsq=udaiya%20chamar\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Google Books<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>We were unable to find pictures of Banke Chamar and Udaiya Chamar online.
