The finance department data, accessed by TOI, reveals that the state\u2019s GSDP in the 2020-2021 financial year has crossed Rs 19.48 lakh crore, equivalent to $268 billion, and UP has climbed to the second spot from number five in 2019-2020.&#8221; The same was reported by <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210227120333\/https:\/\/www.newindianexpress.com\/nation\/2021\/feb\/26\/up-moves-tosecond-spoton-gsdp-list-surpassed-tamil-nadu-gujarat-2269379.html\">The New Indian Express<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/pOcge\">Swarajya<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>TOI also stated, &#8220;Maharashtra continues to lead from the top position while UP moved up three ranks past Tamil Nadu, Gujarat and Karnataka&#8230; The Times of India touted this growth as a quick rise.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-87837 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2021\/03\/Screenshot-2021-03-08-at-18.36.33.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"822\" height=\"590\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2021\/03\/Screenshot-2021-03-08-at-18.36.33.jpg 822w, https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2021\/03\/Screenshot-2021-03-08-at-18.36.33-300x215.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2021\/03\/Screenshot-2021-03-08-at-18.36.33-768x551.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 822px) 100vw, 822px\" \/><\/p>\n<h4>Fact-check<\/h4>\n<p>Alt News studied the historic data published by the <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/C7fypxFV2e\">Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation<\/a> (MOSPI) on Gross State Domestic Product (current prices) from financial year (FY) 2004-05 to FY 2019-20 (view <a href=\"https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2021\/03\/State_wise_SDP_31_07_2020_website.xls\">spreadsheet<\/a>). This data was also published by the <a href=\"https:\/\/m.rbi.org.in\/Scripts\/PublicationsView.aspx?id=20006\">Reserve Bank of India<\/a> (RB) in October 2020 and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiabudget.gov.in\/economicsurvey\/\">Economic Survey 2020-21<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>As per MOSPI, the latest GSDP data available is for the financial year 2019-20. However, in this FY, the GSDP of several states including Maharashtra and Gujarat is not available.<\/strong> Therefore, The Times of India&#8217;s claim that UP&#8217;s GSDP rank fell to fifth in FY 2019-20 and is back to the second cannot be ascertained based on the lastest available data in the public domain. Alt News spoke to journalists who reported on the matter. They said that FY 2020-21 data was presented by the UP finance department. Alt News has reached out to the state government and will update the article if we are able to access the data.<\/p>\n<p>However, what can be ascertained is the fact-check that UP&#8217;s GSDP was second or third highest between <strong>the financial years 2004-05 and 2018-19.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As per MOSPI data, <strong>UP had the second-highest GSDP from the financial year (FY) 2004-05 to 2013-14.<\/strong> In the FY 2014-15, UP&#8217;s GSDP was third-highest just behind Tamil Nadu. Maharashtra had the highest GSDP between 2004 and 2015. MOSPI set FY 2004-05 as the base year. As a result, UP&#8217;s GSDP rank changed from second to the third spot between FYs 2011-18. But in FY 2018-19, UP&#8217;s GSDP rose back to the second spot. Barring FY 2019-20, where the GSDP data is missing for several states, and FY 2020-21 which isn&#8217;t in the public domain yet, UP&#8217;s GSDP has always been higher than that of Gujarat and Karnataka.
