National Health Mission (NHM) states that UIP is one of the largest public health programmes targeting close to 2.67 crore newborns and 2.9 crore pregnant women annually.<\/p>\n<p>According to NHM, &#8220;Under UIP, immunization is providing free of cost against 12 vaccine-preventable diseases: Nationally against 9 diseases &#8211; Diphtheria, Pertussis, Tetanus, Polio, Measles, Rubella, a severe form of Childhood Tuberculosis, Hepatitis B and Meningitis &amp; Pneumonia caused by Hemophilus Influenza type B and Sub-nationally against 3 diseases &#8211; Rotavirus diarrhoea, Pneumococcal Pneumonia and Japanese Encephalitis; of which Rotavirus.&#8221; <strong>This was offered during the Congress government&#8217;s term and still is.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Private sector hospitals also play a crucial role in making India 100% immunised. However, they don&#8217;t offer the vaccines for free. We contacted a spokesperson of one of India&#8217;s largest private hospital players. The spokesperson clarified, &#8220;Private hospitals do not provide vaccines for free. They never have. However, government hospitals do.&#8221; <strong>Congress&#8217;s claim that they offered &#8216;free of cost vaccines for 12 preventable diseases&#8217; is misleading because even under their term private hospitals charged for the vaccines.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As per the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare document &#8216;FAQs on Immunization 2017&#8217; (<a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1jVeK7aYYkMTyZXgiFrX8w_IrAGfBOXqn\/view?usp=sharing\">view pdf<\/a>), the vaccines below are free at government health care centres (page 12). <strong>These are 12 vaccines that prevent 18 diseases<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-88460 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2021\/03\/WhatsApp-Image-2021-03-17-at-16.47.39.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"448\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2021\/03\/WhatsApp-Image-2021-03-17-at-16.47.39.jpeg 448w, https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2021\/03\/WhatsApp-Image-2021-03-17-at-16.47.39-224x300.jpeg 224w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 448px) 100vw, 448px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Alt News also found &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?biw=1440&amp;bih=821&amp;tbs=cdr%3A1%2Ccd_max%3A3%2F18%2F2014&amp;sxsrf=ALeKk02E581UgBaPUFAMJGs4rGtX7lIf5Q%3A1616017060952&amp;ei=pHZSYIDmOfyO4-EPhqqF6Ag&amp;q=frequently+asked+questions+on+Immunization+india&amp;oq=frequently+asked+questions+on+Immunization+india&amp;gs_lcp=Cgdnd3Mtd2l6EAM6BwgjELADECc6BwgjEK4CECc6CAghEBYQHRAeOgcIIRAKEKABUPJGWJlNYKVRaAFwAHgAgAGlAYgBuQeSAQMwLjeYAQCgAQGqAQdnd3Mtd2l6yAEBwAEB&amp;sclient=gws-wiz&amp;ved=0ahUKEwiAyPnWpLjvAhV8xzgGHQZVAY0Q4dUDCA0&amp;uact=5\">FAQs on Immunization 2013<\/a>&#8216; (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2021\/03\/5628564789562315-1.pdf\">view pdf<\/a>) on the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare website. <strong>Back then, eight vaccines under UIP protected against nine diseases.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-88503 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2021\/03\/Screenshot-2021-03-18-at-03.09.31.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"440\" height=\"507\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2021\/03\/Screenshot-2021-03-18-at-03.09.31.png 440w, https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2021\/03\/Screenshot-2021-03-18-at-03.09.31-260x300.png 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 440px) 100vw, 440px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>On February 28, Press Information Bureau issued a <a href=\"https:\/\/pib.gov.in\/PressReleseDetail.aspx?PRID=1701549\">press release<\/a> on COVD-19 jabs stating, &#8220;It was re-iterated that <strong>all vaccines provided to beneficiaries at the Government Health Facilities will be entirely free of cost<\/strong>, while Private Facilities cannot charge the beneficiary a sum above Rs. 250 per person per dose (Rs 150\/- for vaccines and Rs 100\/- as operational charges). Private Hospitals are to remit the cost of vaccine doses allotted to them in a designated account of National Health Authority (NHA). The payment gateway for the same is being enabled by NHA on their website.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>However, it is also noteworthy that major countries \u2013 China, US, EU, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Brazil \u2013 are providing COVID vaccines to citizens at no cost and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.altnews.in\/english-clone-2026\/india-today-falsely-claims-indian-covid-19-vaccine-prices-are-the-lowest-in-the-world\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">India is the only country that has not pledged to provide free vaccination<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It may be reiterated that Congress compared free vaccines under UIP with the cost of COVID vaccines at private hospitals during BJP&#8217;s rule. <strong>Vaccines under UIP are still provided for free at government health facilities.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Several Congress social media accounts have shared a graphic that claims that the former UPA government offered &#8216;free of cost vaccines for 12 preventable diseases&#8217; while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government is charging Rs 250 per dose for the COVID vaccine at private hospitals.
