A gruesome video is being circulated on social media with the claim that a young Muslim labourer was beaten mercilessly after refusing to chant Hindu slogans. “A Muslim youth returning from work was forced to chant religious slogans by a group of nine to 10 anti-social elements in Neemuch city last night at 11:00 PM. Anwar sustained serious injuries at the hands of Deepu Rawat and his associates. He cannot see from one of his eyes and has fractures on his arms and legs. The police took one individual to the station but eventually let him go. There has been no further action. There is no one to speak up on behalf of Anwar. He has two young children. His wife is miserable with grief while the perpetrators continue to roam free,” reads the complete message.<\/p>\n

News website Zamana TV<\/a> published a story on the incident purely on the basis of viral claims suggesting a communal motive.<\/p>\n

The iP NEWS HINDI<\/a> YouTube channel further amplified the communal angle.<\/p>\n

Congress leader Digvijay Singh shared the video alleging that it depicts violence against Dalits. His post<\/a> drew 23,000 likes.<\/p>\n

What incident does the video represent?<\/h4>\n

Alt News reached out to several local journalists and social activists to gather more information about the video. Student activist Arjun Mehar<\/a> revealed that the language used by the people in the video resembles eastern Rajasthan dialect. He posted a tweet to ask if anyone can provide further details, to which a user responded with screenshots of two Facebook accounts belonging to Nagraj Sattavan<\/a> and Keshav Pareeta<\/a>.<\/p>\n
