We work as a technology service provider to partner banks, to allow payments via UPI. UPI apps in the country are categorized as &#8216;third party apps&#8217;, and are not required to be &#8216;payment systems operators&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>\u27a1 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/7sQv2A3mzS\">https:\/\/t.co\/7sQv2A3mzS<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Google Pay India (@GooglePayIndia) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GooglePayIndia\/status\/1275823850563887106?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 24, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Speaking to <a href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/industry\/banking\/finance\/banking\/google-pay-says-it-works-with-banks-to-allow-payments-via-upi-transactions-fully-protected\/articleshow\/76582682.cms?from=mdr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PTI<\/a>, a Google spokesperson had said, &#8220;Google Pay operates completely within the law. Google Pay works as a technology service provider to partner banks, to allow payments via UPI (Unified Payments Interface). UPI apps in the country are categorised as &#8221;third party apps&#8221;, and are not required to be &#8221;payment systems operators&#8221;.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The spokesperson further added, &#8220;All transactions made via Google Pay are fully protected by redressal processes laid out by applicable guidelines of the RBI\/ NPCI, and users can reach out for any help 24\/7, through Google Pay customer care.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It is important to note that the claim shared on Whatsapp is viral based on an article by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiatoday.in\/business\/story\/google-pay-not-payment-system-operator-rbi-to-delhi-hc-1691083-2020-06-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">India Today<\/a> (republish PTI story) where the title says that Google Pay is not a payment system operator. After the article was misinterpreted, India Today changed its title, added an update and also included a Google spokesperson&#8217;s statement.<\/p>\n<p>Below we have added an <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20200621081811\/https:\/\/www.indiatoday.in\/business\/story\/google-pay-not-payment-system-operator-rbi-to-delhi-hc-1691083-2020-06-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">archived version<\/a> of the report and the updated version for the readers to see and compare it themselves. All authorised TPAPs are listed on the NPCI Website. All transactions made using any of the authorized TPAPs are fully protected by the redressal processes laid out by applicable guidelines of NPCI\/RBI and customers already have full access to the same.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Thus, Google Pay is a third-party operator that allows UPI payment.
