India will hold the Security Council Presidency for the month of August. Council members are appointed in alphabetical order. As seen in the image below, India&#8217;s membership will end on December 31, 2022. The remaining 10 members are elected for two years. China, France, Russia, UK and the US are the permanent members. India has been trying to become a permanent member of the council for years, but has been unsuccessful due to a lack of votes. The five permanent members have the &#8216;right to veto&#8217;, meaning that if any of these countries do not agree with any resolution, it cannot be passed.
