The police statement said 45-year-old Leelamma, a resident of Vijayanagar (Hassan), was detained for allegedly desecrating the Ganesha idol in Belur, Hassan. The SP further stated that Leelamma had left Hassan for Belur by bus around 8:30 pm. She then traveled to Chikamagalur and returned to Belur. Footage clearly shows that she entered the temple and behaved indecently near the idol. She later returned to Hassan. Police detained Leelamma near her home in Vijayanagar. According to preliminary information, the family stated that Leelamma was mentally unstable. The officer stated that a medical examination would be conducted to obtain accurate information about the accused’s mental state.
In a statement to the media, Leelamma’s mother, Lakshmamma, said that her daughter had been mentally unwell for the past 5-6 years.
Speaking to Alt News, investigating officer for the case Mr. Revanna confirmed that there was no communal angle to the incident. He said, “No conversion mafia is involved in this. The accused woman is mentally unstable. She was sent to judicial custody the same day she was arrested.”
To sum up, the incident of placing slippers on the Ganesh idol in a temple in Karnataka is being given a false conversion angle on social media.
