A video which shows horrific visuals of buildings reduced to rubble is being circulated on social media. “Mexico Eathquake 8.1 RichterScale just hours ago today,” posted a Facebook user.

Several people on Facebook in the span of a few hours shared the video suggesting that Mexico was struck by an 8.1 magnitude earthquake.

FACT-CHECK

Alt News performed a Google search and found that Mexico was devastated by an 8.1 magnitude earthquake on September 7, 2017. This is a two-year-old incident which was dubbed as the strongest quake to hit the country in the last 100 years. According to a CNN report, at least 61 people had in the 2017 Chiapas earthquake.

In a 2017 BBC news report, identical visuals can be seen which prove that an old video of the earthquake in Mexico is being shared on social media as recent.

Furthermore, no recent media report supports the claim that Mexico suffered tremors of 8.1 magnitudes. However, according to the blog Volcano Discovery, a light earthquake of 4.1 magnitudes did hit the country on October 14.
