Couple pleading with daughter not to marry Muslim man? Video viral with false claim

A one-minute-long video has been gathering a lot of traction on social media. The clip features an elderly couple who is seen pleading with a man and a woman and begging at their feet. After some time, the younger man and woman leave the scene. While sharing this video, it is being claimed that the younger woman, who was from Gujarat, married a ‘Jihadi’ i.e. a Muslim. And her parents were pleading with her with folded hands. Twitter user Praveen Singh shared this video with a similar claim. It has garnered 2,897 retweets at the time of writing. (Archived link)

Fact Check

To gather more information about the video, Alt News performed a keyword search in Gujarati. We found a news report dated June 5, 2023 by Gujarati news outlet Gujarat Tak. According to the outlet, a girl eloped with her own elder brother’s brother-in-law and got married to him in the Raiya village of Banaskantha, Gujarat. Her parents had actually fixed the girl’s marriage with their younger son’s brother-in-law.

Upon further research, we also found an article by ETV Bharat reporting the incident. According to the article, the daughter of Galababhai Barot of Raiya village eloped and married her elder brother’s brother-in-law. Her parents lodged a missing complaint after which she and her husband were called to the Deodar police station. There, the parents asked their daughter to return to them but she did not listen. Following this, the parents also fell at her feet to convince her. However, she still left along with her elder brother’s brother-in-law (her husband).

रिपोर्ट में ये भी बताया गया है कि लड़की की शादी उसके माता-पिता ने छोटे भाई के साले के साथ ‘आमने-सामने’ तय की थी. ‘आमने-सामने’ के रिश्ते में एक घर के भाई-बहन की शादी सामने वाले घर के भाई और बहन से होती है. और इसी के तहत इस लड़की की शादी भी उसके छोटे भाई के साले से तय हुई थी. लेकिन लड़की ने भागकर अपने बड़े भाई के साले के साथ शादी कर ली.

This report, too, said the marriage of the woman was arranged by her parents with their younger son’s brother-in-law. But the woman ran away and married her elder brother’s brother-in-law.

To sum it up, it becomes clear here that the younger woman seen in the video married her own brother-in-law and not a Muslim man. However, the video featuring the parents begging their daughter to return home was shared on social media with a false communal angle that she had eloped with and married a Muslim boy.
