A video purportedly showing a Muslim man cooking with sewer water is circulating widely on social media. Users claim that the Muslim man made biryani using water from a roadside drain.

X user Jitendra Pratap Singh, a BJP supporter who shares communal propaganda on a regular basis and is followed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, shared the video and claimed it was an eye-opening incident for anyone who enjoyed eating biryani in a Muslim hotel.

Sudarshan News journalist Sagar Kumar and Sadhna News editor Mukesh Kumar also shared the video on X making similar claims.

Fact Check

There are several factors that raise doubts over the authenticity of the video. First of all, biriyani is not cooked in an open pot. Secondly and more importantly, if someone wants to adulterate food or deliberately use sewage water for cooking, they are more likely to do it secretly, rather than cooking openly with sewage water in the middle of a street.

Upon closer inspection, Alt News found some inconsistencies in the viral video. For example, when the person in the video scoops water from a roadside drain with a ladle, the ladle appears to hold very little water. However, when he empties the ladle into the cooking pot, a lot of water is poured into it. Furthermore, the shape of the ladle appears to change from frame to frame in the video. Again, when the ladle is placed on another vessel towards the end of the clip, it appears to be suspended in the air. There is no way that a large ladle can be made to rest on a small pot like that.

There are other inconsistencies in the video that are typical of AI-generated clips. For example, the main ingredient of the food, which many believed to be rice does not have the look of actual rice. The grains are unnaturally long. Also, when water is added to rice, it vanishes instantly. The figures in the background are absolutely motionless throughout the clip.

Further, we checked the video with an AI detector tool and it showed a 99.8% of it being AI generated.

To sum up, the widely viral video of an apparently Muslim man cooking Biriyani with sewage water is AI-generated. It does not sow a real incident.
