Atrocities against a Hindu family in Bangladesh? No. Video viral with false claims

A 20-second clip showing a group of men barging into a room with a semi-naked woman and a man is viral on social media. Towards the end of the clip, a child can be seen crying on the bed while the woman, crying, desperately tries to cover herself up. Some users have claimed that it shows miscreants torturing a Bangladeshi Hindu family while others allege that the video shows a woman being raped in front of her child.

A verified user on X (formerly Twitter), Yati Sharma (@yati_Official1), shared the video on March 4 with the caption, “What is happening in Bangladesh? Where is the Human Rights Commission (a Hindu family is being tortured) are they not able to see the atrocities of Hindus happening in Bangladesh…” The post received 415,500 views, 3,100 likes and was reshared 2,100 times. Fact Check:

To verify the viral clip, we broke it down into several key frames and ran these through a reverse-image search. This led us to a report titled, “A 19-second video of Munshiganj Jail Jailer Noor Mohammad goes viral!” on a Bangladesh-based portal. The report has several screenshots from the viral clip. The report identifies the man in the viral video as Noor Mohammad Mridha, a jailer in Munshiganj District in Bangladesh. The report says that Mridha was caught having an illicit relationship with someone’s wife.

Bangladeshi media outlet, Kalbela also reported on this incident. Their report said that the video is from March 2024 when Noor Mohammad Mridha was on duty at Magura District Jail. The report said that Mridha was involved in a relationship with a prisoner’s wife. “After the video went viral, the matter was reported to the district administration, district police department and district jail authorities. However, no actions were taken later,” it added.

A YouTube channel, Bangla TV Worldwide, also shared the viral clip under the title “Obscene video of a jailer and prisoner’s wife leaked, Video Record leak, Bangla TV.” This also says that the viral clip is from last year and that there is no communal angle to this incident.

To sum up, the video of the semi-naked woman and a man who later get into a brawl with a group of men doing rounds on social media has gone viral with false and baseless communal claims. The clip neither depicts atrocities against a Hindu family in Bangladesh nor does it show a woman being raped in front of her child. Our fact-check report reveals that the video is from March 2024 and is of a Bangladeshi jailer who was caught in an illicit relationship.
