Several Facebook and Twitter users have shared a video of a press conference in the US and claimed Dr Anthony Fauci, America’s top infectious diseases expert and chief medical adviser to the US president, has been sacked.

Twitter user @ssingapuri posted the video in question and claimed that Dr Fauci was sacked and the US admitted that the COVID-19 virus is man-made.

False claim

The official website of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) lists Dr Anthony S. Fauci as its director. If the claim about Dr Fauci being sacked was true it would be reported widely in the media.

The video in question is a June 15 press conference by far-right conspiracy theorist Marjorie Taylor Greene and House Republicans where they discuss the Fire Fauci Act, a bill introduced by the Republicans to fire Dr Fauci. In the past, Greene has publically supported QAnon, a discredited far-right conspiracy theory alleging that a cabal of Satanic, cannibalistic paedophiles run a global child sex trafficking ring and conspired against former president Donald Trump during his term in office.

To sum it up, the social media claim that Dr Anthony Fauci is sacked is false. However, a section of Republicans, led by far-right conspiracy theorist Marjorie Taylor Greene, is seeking to get Dr Fauci sacked. They blame him for the response to the coronavirus pandemic, accusing him of misleading Americans and providing contradictory advice on masks and social distancing.
