Trigger Warning: The story details domestic violence, and the visuals below may be distressing for many. Readers’ discretion advised.

Photos of a man and woman posing together as a couple, along with disturbing visuals of the same woman with injuries and marks on her face, are viral on social media with claims that the woman, a Hindu, was subjected to domestic violence after being married to a Muslim man.

Several users have circulated this claim referring to the husband as ‘Abdul‘, a trope deployed in Islamophobic discourses to demonise Muslim men as inherently violent and cruel to their partners.

X user Komal Yadav (@Ydavkomal) posted the viral claim with the same Abdul trope. At the time of this article being written, the post had garnered more than 400,000 views. (Archive)

Another user, Jaipur Dialogues (@JaipurDialogues), also posted the viral claim with photographs. Note that this user has been fact-checked by Alt News several times for amplifying misinformation. (Archive

The claim was also propagated by several other users, such as Swathi Bellam (@BellamSwathi), Manoj Singh (@PracticalSpy), and Dr Anita Vladivosky (@anitavladivoski). (Archives: 1, 2, 3)

Fact Check

We ran a reverse image search on the viral image, which led us to this Facebook post from September 3, 2024.

On carrying out a reverse image of the images from that post, we were led to another post uploaded by the victim, Ayehsa Putul, on August 30, 2024.

In the caption of this post, which is in Bengali, the victim, Ayesha Putul, states that in 2014, a person named Rakibul Islam Rakib started working in her father’s company. In the course of a few months, they started interacting on social media. The same year, Rakib proposed that they get married, and in September 2014, Putul tied the knot with Rakib without her parents’ consent. The next year, they were accepted into the family. However, Putul recounts how Rakib started physically assaulting her soon after. Despite having helped him with money for his business, Putul asserts that her husband repeatedly betrayed her trust by continuing to pursue extramarital relations, as well as physically assaulting her, as attested in the photos attached in her post.

Alt News analysed her profile and posts in detail, and based on this and the comments on her posts, we could ascertain that she was based in Bangladesh.

Thus, the photos do not show a Hindu-Muslim couple in India. A Muslim woman named Ayesha Putul had. in August 2024, uploaded these images elucidating the betrayal and abuse she had faced from her husband, who was also Muslim. Users on social media have amplified the viral photos with false communal claims, wrongly alleging that it depicts a case of interfaith domestic violence in India, and reiterating the controversial Abdul trope.
