Old images shared as Devendra Fadnavis visiting mazaar after Maharashtra elections

A set of images of former Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis are being shared on social media with the claim that he visited a shrine (mazar) after resigning recently as the Chief Minister. On November 29, Facebook page MOHD Sakib “इराक़ी” (Iraqi) posted two photos of Devendra Fadnavis with the text, “महाराष्ट्र में हारने के बाद “पूर्व BJP मुख्यमंत्री फडणविश” पहुंचे मजार चादर चढ़ाने को👇 / अब भौंको भौं भौं जैसे राहुल गांधी के टाइम भौंकते हो/ अरे बाप रे मुल्लों वाली टोपी भी पहने है मत्था भी टेके हैं आप तो पक्का हिन्दू खतरे में फिर आ रहा जागो भक्तों जागो😉/ भक्तों तुम हिन्दू-मुसलमान में उलझे रहो तुम्हारी ये ऐसे👉🔔 बजाते रहेंगे / जिनको इस पोस्ट से मिर्ची लगी होगी बस वही शेयर नही करेंगे😉 ( Former BJP Chief Minister Fadnavis reached after offering defeat in Maharashtra/ Now bark like Rahul Gandhi/ And after wearing a cap like Muslims, looks like Hindus are in danger, wake up bhakts / Bhatks you played the Hinduism and Muslim narrative; now it’s your turn to get played / Those who feel betrayed by these pictures share the post)”

Since then, this post has gone viral on WhatsApp. Several people requested to fact-check this claim on Alt News WhatsApp.

FALSE CLAIM

Alt News did a reverse image search of both the images and found that they have been used in an India Express article from January 6, 2015. According to the article, these images are from the first death anniversary (held in Mumbai) of Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin, former spiritual head of the Dawoodi Bohra community.

Fadnavis had also tweeted on the occasion.

The archived page on the Dawoodi Bohras’ official website confirms that Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin passed away on Jan 17, 2014. However, his death anniversary was celebrated on January 6 as per the Islamic Egyptian calendar, reports this article by the DNA.

Dawoodi Bohras are a sect of Shia Islam.
