Several Right-wing influencers on X have shared a video claiming that it shows a Muslim man urinating into a tub of sweets.

Among them is verified user Deepak Sharma (@SonOfBharat7), who wrote in his tweet, “As a human being or as a follower of Islamic faith, would you like to eat these Rasgullas which have been urinated on or feed them to someone?

Others who shared the same video include @MrSinha_, @StringReveals, @Sudanshutrivedi and others.

The user named String (@StringReveals) claimed that the incident was from Warangal, Telangana.

The video is being shared amid a row over the controversial move by Uttar Pradesh administration in which eateries located along the kanwar yatra route were asked to display the names of their owners and employees to prevent “confusion” among devotees. Haridwar Police in the state of Uttarakhand has issued a similar instruction.

As can be seen above, Deepak Sharma (@SonOfBharat7) addressed his tweet to actor Sonu Sood. This is presumably because the actor had shared a tweet ostensibly opposing the order. “There should be only one name plate on every shop : “HUMANITY”,” he wrote in a cryptic tweet. Similarly, @MrSinha_ tagged journalist Rajdeep Sardesai in his tweet apparently because Sardesai, too, had tweeted about the move, calling it “brazenly divisive” and a “de facto (an) economic boycott”.

When put in context, it becomes clear that at a time when the orders by the Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand Police are being criticized as discriminatory against Muslims, the video is being shared to set the narrative that Muslims indulge in practices like urinating in food.

Same Video was Viral in 2023

In May 2023, some X (then Twitter )users shared the video and claimed in their tweets that an ‘enemy of Hindus’ was ‘urinating in Gulab Jamun’ during the wedding season. They also cautioned the public saying, “Check the Aadhaar card of the confectioner before you employ his workers. Otherwise, you will lose your honour.”

A user named Prabhat Sharma Rashtravadi shared the video with the above-mentioned claim.

So did another user named Anchor Vagisha Pandey, whose Twitter bio describes her as bureau head, Madhya Pradesh and anchor-cum-producer at Sudarshan News.

The Video was Viral in 2022 As Well

In December 2022, Zee Uttar Pradesh Uttarakhand published the video on its website. The title of the video read “बंदे ने शादी के लिए बन रहे खाने में किया कुछ ऐसा, देखकर आएगी घिन”. The caption said ‘Man Urinated in Gulab Jamun’. (Archive)

Many Twitter users shared the clip with the claim that the man seen in the video was a Muslim, and dubbed the incident as a ‘Jihad’, a term often used by the Right Wing to target Muslims. Head of social media of UP BJP youth wing Richa Rajpoot used the phrase ‘Food Jihad’ while sharing the video. She wrote: “फ़ूड जिहाद के बाद इस #जिहाद का क्या नाम?”. (Archive)

User @RituRathaur shared the same clip and her tweet garnered over 13,800 views. (Archive)

User @TheDeepak2022 also tweeted the image and asked the viewers to find out the names of the caterer and the cook before eating at a wedding party. (Archive)

Several other users had shared the clip with the same claim. (Archives- 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9)

Fact Check

Alt News found a longer version of the viral video on Instagram uploaded by user @ashiq.billota. At the end of the Instagram video, the person can be seen holding a bottle from which a liquid is being poured into the tub.

The last few frames of the original video have been clipped in the viral video to give the impression that the man seen in the video is urinating into the confectioneries. Below, we have taken a screenshot of the exact moment where the bottle is visible and circled it out for our readers.

On watching the entire clip, it becomes clear that it is a prank video.

So, the video where a man seemingly urinates into a tub of confectioneries is actually an edited clip. The longer version of the video shows the man pouring a transparent liquid into the tub from a bottle. The viral video is being falsely shared with a communal spin.
