Visuals with the words “I love Muhmad” and “I love Mamud” spray-painted on the walls of two temples are viral on social media. In one of the videos showing the graffiti, the person recording the video is heard saying that the visuals are from a Shiv temple in the Bulak Garhi village in Uttar Pradesh.
Pro-Right social media user @KreatelyMedia, whose posts have often been fact-checked by Alt News, shared the visuals, blaming ‘Islamists’ for desecrating the temple. “As the population grows, so will their terror,” the user remarked. (Archive)

Fact Check
To verify the claims and understand what happened, we looked for a statement by the Aligarh police. Aligarh police’s senior superintendent, in his initial statement, revealed that four temples had been desecrated in two neighbouring villages — Bulak Garhi and Bhagwanpur. He also stated that they were thoroughly investigating all aspects, including a previous dispute that had come to notice.

One of the images shared by the Aligarh police shows a police officer interacting with two individuals in front of a pink temple. According to a Dainik Bhaskar report, slightly different graffiti was also sprayed on a white temple.
In a later press conference SSP Neeraj Jadon revealed that four Hindu youth, Jishant Kumar from Bulak Garhi, and Abhishek, Akash and Dilip from Bhagwapur, were arrested in connection with the case. He also said that one man named Rahul was absconding. The police retrieved CCTV footage, call detail records to catch the culprits and noted that text on the walls had spelling mistakes. The police also went through older cases and found that one of the main accused, Jishant Singh, fought with a man named Mustakeem, while Rahul had a tiff with Gul Mohammed. In order to frame their adversaries, the accused made the graffiti on the temple walls. “They thought that by making such religious graffiti, the police would promptly investigate and arrest their opposing parties…” said SSP Jadon.

Thus, it was actually some Hindu youths who sprayed walls of Hindu temples in two villages of UP’s Aligarh with different versions of the ‘I love Muhammed’ graffiti. Claims by social media users that this was the work of ‘Islamist Jihadis’ is false and baseless. According to the police, the miscreants desecrated the temple to frame their Muslim adversaries in a fit of revenge owing to personal tiffs.
