After a video went viral showing BJP MP Anurag Thakur complaining to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla about an MP from the Trinamool Congress smoking e-cigarettes inside the Parliament, several Right-wing social media users and influencers claimed that the TMC MP in question was Mahua Moitra, who represents the Krishnanagar constituency in West Bengal.

Thakur, the readers should note, did not mention the name of the MP against whom he was making the complaint.

Pro-BJP influencer Shashank Singh, who runs the X account, Facts (@BefittingFacts), shared the video clip claiming that TMC MP Mahua Moitra was smoking an e-cigarette inside the Parliament. (Archive)

Another X account, Subham (@subhsays), shared the same video clip alleging that TMC MP Mohua Moitra was “caught red-handed while smoking an e-cigarette”. (Archive)

The post was later deleted but not before it garnered approximately 100,000 views.

Far-right account Voice of Hindus (@Warlock_Shubh), too, claimed that Mahua Moitra had been caught red-handed in the Parliament while smoking e-cigarettes. (Archive)

The post amassed approximately 500,000 views.

Digital Media outlet The Tatva (@thetatvaindia) also made the same claim. (Archive)

The Right-wing propaganda website The Jaipur Dialogues published an article containing these X posts. The headline says, “Was Mahua Moitra puffing an e-cigarette in Parliament?” The article doesn’t provide an answer to the question, though. It describes Moitra as “Rolex Kumari”.

Several other social media users made similar claims while either sharing the video clip of Thakur from the Parliament, or by sharing Moitra’s old picture while smoking a cigarette.

Another group of social media users claimed Anurag Thakur had mentioned it was Mahua Moitra who had been found smoking in the House. Some of these are media outlets.

Fact Check

Alt News traced the complaint that Anurag Thakur filed with the Lok Sabha Speaker. In the letter, Thakur alleged that on December 11, “Parliamentary rules and statutory laws” had been violated “due to the use of an e-cigarette inside the Lok Sabha chamber.” He noted that “a member of Parliament from the All India Trinamool Congress was observed smoking an electronic cigarette while seated in the House during the sessions.”

No name is mentioned in the letter — not of Moitra or of anyone else.

Mahua Moitra was not in Delhi on December 11

Alt News found that TMC MP Mahua Moitra was at Krishnanagar in Nadia district of West Bengal on December 11 with chief minister Mamata Banerjee at the formal launch of the “Pathashree-Rastashree 4” project.

A local news portal, Bangla Hunt, streamed the programme live from Krishnanagar on December 11. In the video, Mahua Moitra is clearly visible alongside CM Mamata Banerjee during the inauguration.

The programme was also covered by local media outlets. The Wall published a report dated December 11 with Moitra’s photo alongside Mamata Banerjee and other state government officials.

Moitra also attended a public meeting with Banerjee against the SIR process in Bengal on the same day. She shared photos of the event on her own Facebook page.

Trinamool sources confirmed to Alt News that Moitra was in her home state from December 10 to 12. She flew from Delhi to Kolkata by an evening flight on December 10. She flew back to Delhi by an afternoon flight on December 12.

To sum up, on December 11, Moitra was not present in the Parliament, instead, she was in Krishnanagar, West Bengal, with chief minister Mamata Banerjee for the inaugural ceremony of a state government project. Claims that Moitra was smoking an e-cigarette in the House on December 11 are false and baseless. Also, BJP MP Anurag Thakur did not mention Mahua Moitra in his verbal allegation or written complaint.
