Days before the Bihar polls, a clip featuring actor Manoj Bajpayee has gone viral, which looks like a promotional video for RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav. “Tejashwi Yadav will come to power in Bihar” — this line comes in the video several times as a refrain.

Bihar will vote in two phases on November 6 and 11, and results will be announced on the 14th.

X user Sunil Yadav, who describes himself as “not secular” in his bio, shared the video clip stating that where multiple Bollywood actors were chanting ‘Modi Modi’, Bajpayee, originally from Bihar, was campaigning for Tejashwi Yadav. (Archive)

The post has garnered approximately 200,000 views.

Another X user, Dhanraj Yadav, also shared the video. (Archive)

So did a parody account named after Tejashwi Yadav which later deleted the post. We have a screen recording of the post.

Fact Check

At first glance, two significant things can be noticed in the video which raise doubts about its authenticity. Firstly, lip sync is off, and secondly, a watermark “Spoof” is there in the bottom right corner.

A reverse image search on a few keyframes led us to the original video made and uploaded by Amazon Prime Video on November 1, 2023.

This video was originally made as an advertisement for the streaming platform, Amazon Prime Videos. In the original version of the video, the reporter asks Bajpayee, “What shows are you watching these days?”, to which he replies, “If you have any recommendations, then please let me know.” Following this, the reporter asks the audience to recommend what Bajpayee should watch. Subsequently, several people in the ad recommend different shows available on Amazon Prime Videos.

When one watches the two videos, it becomes clear that the RJD-promotional is an edited version of the Amazon Prime ad.

In the doctored version, a few scenes were digitally altered to include visuals of Tejashwi Yadav’s campaign. In one frame, a woman hands a note to Bajpayee. In the original scene, the note features “Farzi” (an Amazon Prime original series) written on it. This is replaced by Tejashwi Yadav’s campaign image. In another altered frame, Bajpayee shows his phone to an airhostess, which featurs Tejashwi Yadav’s campaign slides.

Manoj Bajpayee also shared a public clarification under the post made by a parody account of Tejashwi Yadav, stating that he had “no association or allegiance with any political party”. Bajpayee confirmed that the video was “fake”, and it was edited from a promotional advertisement he had shot for Amazon Prime Videos.

To sum up, the video featuring Manoj Bajpayee endorsing RJD and Tejashwi Yadav in the Bihar elections is doctored. The original video was a promotional advertisement by Amazon released in November 2023. It has been digitally manipulated to add political content.
