A couple of days after the first phase of polling in West Bengal, a video showing Trinamool Congress’s Sagardighi candidate, Byron Biswas, went viral, in which he appeared to be accepting defeat in the polls.
In the 0:28min video, which was shared by a host of BJP leaders and supporters, Biswas is heard saying, “I am losing in my constituency. Zakir Saheb is losing in Jangipur. Nur Alam is losing in Samserganj. Our Amirul is losing in Farakka… Please forgive me for my mistakes. “
Bengal BJP’s official X handle shared the clip, claiming Sagardighi candidate Byron Biswas had openly conceded defeat and named sitting MLAs who were set to lose. (Archive)
After Anubrata Mandal admitted that the TMC may struggle to cross even 15–16 seats in Phase 1, Sagardighi candidate Byron Biswas went a step further by openly conceding defeat, naming sitting MLAs who are set to lose, and acknowledging that central forces ensured a fair election.… pic.twitter.com/5OCIpmIOUf

The clip was also shared by BJP IT cell chief Amit Malviya with the same claim. (Archive)
In an epic admission, after TMC leader Anubrata Mandal said that the party could hardly win 15–16 seats in the first phase of the elections, TMC’s Sagardighi candidate Byron Biswas has now declared that he is going to lose. Among others who made the same claim while amplifying the video are Bengal BJP leader Debjit Sarkar, Congress functionary Sohom Banerjee, self-proclaimed news outlets News Arena India and News Algebra, and X handle Saffron Swamy.
Several media outlets, too, posted video reports with the headlines/ thumbnails claiming that Biswas had accepted defeat. Among them are TV 9 Bangla and Bangla Hunt.
Fact Check
According to multiple news reports, Biswas had a confrontation with security men at the Jangipur Polytechnic College on Friday night, which had been made the strongroom for Farakka, Samserganj, Suti, Raghunathganj, Jangipur and Sagardighi assembly constituencies. The viral clip relates to that.
A reverse image search of the keyframe led to a longer version of the video on Facebook, uploaded on April 25, 2026, by Murshidabad-based digital news platform News24x7 Bangla. The accompanying caption read: “Outgoing MLA Byron Biswas expressed strong anger outside the Jangipur strong room over repeated allegations of cameras being switched off in phases.”
In the video, Biswas alleges security lapses in a strong room in Jangipur. He first points out that there was no LCD screen outside the gates of the polling station, which would allow observers to monitor the situation. Biswas claims that the authorities delayed their action until he contacted the subdivisional officer (SDO) to request the installation of the screen, which was completed within 30 minutes.
The TMC leader then alleges several instances of disruptions to CCTV cameras. He states that the cameras were non-functional for approximately 17 minutes starting at 11:17 am and again for nearly 20 minutes from around 12:20 pm. Biswas argued that if this were due to a power outage, the entire area would have been affected. Biswas contended that this was not a mere “technical fault”, as claimed by authorities, but a “Delhi fault,” implying a conspiracy.
Biswas goes on to remark, “There is no longer any need for votes in Bengal. There is no need for elections here anymore.”
When a reporter asks, “What are you apprehending?” he replies with evident sarcasm, “I am losing my assembly seat. Zakir Saheb is losing in Jangipur, Nur Alam is losing in Samserganj, and our Amirul is losing in Farakka. As for the rest of the state, I cannot say. Those at Camac Street are better informed, and the Centre, of course, knows even more. My regards, sir… please forgive me if I have erred.”
He continues, “I wish for the BJP to win and form the government; I wish for the Congress to win and form the government; I wish for the CPI(M) to win and form the government… but it must be done fairly. Didi and Abhishek surely do not endorse such coercion. We have neither learned nor been taught to resort to force or plundering.”
This makes it evident that a part of Byron Biswas’s exchange with journalists is being shared without context distorting his intended remarks.
To sum up, the claim that outgoing MLA and TMC’s Sagardighi candidate Byron Biswas has already conceded defeat is false. The viral video has been clipped and is being shared sans context.
