Video of AAP MLA Ajay Dutt’s skirmish with Delhi police viral as Rahul Gandhi

A 30-second video that shows policemen aggressively escorting a man is viral with Malayalam text that reads, “His father was the Prime Minister, father’s mother was the Prime Minister, and his grandmother was the Prime Minister. If this is his fate, then what about the common man?” Thus implying that in man in the video is Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.

The video (archived link) has been shared against the backdrop of the alleged rape of a Dalit woman in Hathras. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi visited the victim’s family after several confrontations with Uttar Pradesh police.

Video shows AAP MLA Ajay Dutt

Alt News performed a reverse image search using video verification tool InVid and found that the video was posted by Aam Aadmi Party’s official Twitter account on September 30.

The tweet identified the man as AAP MLA Ajay Dutt on his way to Safdarjung hospital to aid the Hathras victim’s family. “Police manhandled him. Police wanted to carry the victim’s body in an unnumbered vehicle without the consent of the family,” it furthered.

Ajay Dutt had also tweeted the video on October 3. He wrote in Hindi, “After the death of Hathras’s Dalit daughter [name redacted] in Safdarjung hospital, the police is harassing the family members of the victim. They are taking the dead body in a car without a number plate. When I questioned the DCP, ACP, SHO, I was thrashed. I request @LtGovDelhi to take strict actions against them. Watch the video.”

As per a report by The Outlook, Dutt told reporters, “They took me to a room, pulled me by my collar. I was slapped and kicked by the SHO, ACP, and DCP. If this is the treatment given to an elected representative then think about the common man.”

Thus, the social media claim that video shows Rahul Gandhi is false. The man in the white kurta is AAP MLA Ajay Dutt.
