A video is viral on social media platforms, which shows Prime Minister Narendra Modi appearing to present the Chinese President Xi Jinping with his own portrait.

Users have shared this clip with the claim that it is from the Chinese President’s current visit to India for the ongoing BRICS summit in New Delhi on September 12 and 13.

An X user named Priya Purohit (@Priyaa_Purohit) posted the clip on September 12, which garnered close to 800,000 views at the time of this article being written. (Archive)

Fact Check

To check whether Modi had indeed presented Xi Jinping with his own portrait, we broke down the clip into keyframes. A reverse image search on one such keyframe led us to this article published by Asia News Network on August 11, 2025. It features a photo which shows the leaders posing with the portrait, with the description clarifying that it was taken on October 12, 2019, during a meeting between Narendra Modi and Xi Jinping in Mahabalipuram in Tamil Nadu.

Taking cue from this, we ran relevant keyword searches on Google, which led us to more reports about the Chinese President’s visit to India in 2019.

We found that on October 12, PM Modi had gifted his Chinese counterpart a handmade silk shawl. An NDTV report noted, that in return, Xi Jinping had gifted him a “…porcelain memento, which had PM Modi’s image.

The Times of India, in a report from October 12, 2019, wrote in detail about the meeting between the two leaders on the concluding day of the summit, corroborating that a porcelain plate, made of traditional bone China, with a portrait of the Indian Prime Minister on it, had been presented to Modi at Mamallapuram, or Mahabalipuram.

Other news outlets like Economic Times and WION, too, reported on the exchange of gifts between the two leaders.

We also found a video of the meeting, uploaded by VOA News China, where it can be clearly seen that the Chinese President is offering Modi the porcelain plate with his portrait on it.

The Press Information Bureau (PIB) had also posted photos of the two leaders meeting on the concluding day of the summit.

To sum up, a video is viral with the false claim that PM Modi presented Xi Jinping with his own portrait, during the 2026 BRICS summit in New Delhi. Alt News found that it was in fact the Chinese President who had presented Modi with a porcelain plate carrying his portrait, during an informal summit at Mamallapuram in October 2019.
