Audio clip based on Facebook post from 2017 attributed to journalist Ravish Kumar

An audio clip of 4:46 minutes is doing the rounds on messaging applications like WhatsApp. A man can be heard talking about the lack of representation of the Muslim community in the media and the prevalence of pliant media in this era of corporate-driven news. In the clip, the person criticises the Muslim community for not taking the effort to develop and invest in independent media which would help raise their voice. He then goes on to propose the idea that the Muslim community should take up matters in their own hands and try to find solutions for their problems through technology and technological means. Facebook user Ibn Aadam posted the audio clip while ascribing it to journalist Ravish Kumar.

The following message is being forwarded on WhatsApp along with the audio clip, “Ravish Kumar gives a shoe on the face to Muslims. It is enraging to hear but what can we do. We will have to believe. (रवीश कुमार का मुसलमानों के मुंह पर जूता, सुनकर जलन तो बहुत हो रही है पर अब करे तो क्या करें यकीनन करना तो हमें ही है और हमें ही करना था.)”

Transcript of the complete audio clip in Hindi: “मैं देख रहा हूं और पढ़ भी रहा हूं कि कुछ लोग मीडिया को दलाल कह रहे हैं. कुछ मीडिया मुर्दाबाद के नारे लगा रहे हैं. यक़ीनन ये सब मुसलमान ही ज्यादातर कह रहे हैं और बेशक़ मीडिया में बेशूमार हमारे यहाँ की कमियां भी हैं, इस बात से भी कोई इनकार नहीं किया जा सकता है. लेकिन मेरा सवाल जो बार-बार मेरे ज़ेहन में आता है जैसा कि आप बताते है कि आपकी तादाद 20,25 या उससे भी ज़्यादा करोड़ हो सकती हैं, और आपके पास है जो जमियत-उलेमा-ए-हिंद है, जमात-ए-इस्लामी हिंद है, ऑल इंडिया मुस्लिम पर्सनल लॉ बोर्ड है, दारूल उलूम है, देवबंद है, वक्फ़ बोर्ड है, हज़रत निज़ामुद्दीन है, अजमेर शरीफ़ है, और ऐसे बहुत सारे नाम मैं ले सकता हूँ यहाँ पर. जैसे आपके पास इमाम बुखारी है, मुफ़्ती मुकर्रम है, अहमद पटेल है, आज़म खान है, अज़ीम प्रेमजी है, असदउद्दीन औवेसी है, बदरूद्दीन है, अजमल है, शाहरूख खान है, सलमान खान है, आमिर खान है, मोहम्मद अज़हरूद्दीन है, दिल्ली में आपके पास एक बहुत बड़ा इलाका है, औखला है सीलमपुर है. तो फिर मेरा एक सवाल ये है और आपके अंदर पढ़े लिखे लोग न हो ऐसा भी नहीं है. पढ़े लिखे लोग भी आपके पास काफी है, फिर भी आप एक अपना न्यूज़ चैनल नहीं चला सके अभी तक! ये सोचने वाली बात है कि नहीं, चैनल तो दूर की बात है, आपसे एक ढ़ंग का नेशनल अख़बार, राष्ट्रीय अख़बार जिसे बोलते है वो नहीं चलाया ​गया आजतक! रेडियो स्टेशन तक तो खोल नहीं पाएं है अभी तक! डिजिटल मीडिया, न्यू मीडिया का ज़माना आ गया है, और इसके बावजूद आप जो है एक जानदार या कामचलाऊ वैक्ल्पिक मीडिया अभी तक उसको जो है नहीं ला पाये है, नहीं चला पाये है, नहीं खोल पाये हैं. पता है कि इसकी वजह क्या है असलियत क्या है आखिर? असलियत इसकी ये है कि जो सदियों से जलसों में, इज्तिमो में, उर्स में ग़रीबों के लाखों-करोड़ों उड़ाए गये है और बिरयानी के बाद मीठी सौंफ चबाके, उनको सबको बोल दिया है कि अब खाट पे पड़ के अब सो जाओ. अगर इन्हीं पैसों का ढ़ंग से इस्तेमाल किया गया होता, मीडिया हाउस खोला गया होता, तो आज ये ज़लालत, ये रूसवाई जो आप झेल रहे हैं ना. ये आज आपको झेलनी नहीं पड़ती. आपकी आवाज़ को उठाने वाले कुछ चैनल होते जो आपकी आवाज़ को उठाते. ये ताजमहल, कुतुबमीनार, लालक़िला ये सब दिखाकर कब तक इतराते रहोगे? ये हमारे पुरखे जो बनाके चले गये, इनपे कब तक इतराते रहोगे? तुमने क्या बनाया की जिसपर तुम्हारी औलाद जो है वो कुछ इतरा सके? हमारे बुज़ुर्गों ने विरासत के रूप में क्या क्या दे दिया हमे, वक्फ बोर्ड्स दिया जो अरबों-खरबों की ज़मीन, मस्जिदों, मदरसों, क़ब्रिस्तान, खानकाह, दरगाह, स्कूल, कॉलेज के लिए जो उन्होंने जिसे कहते हैं डोनेट कर दी थी, दान कर दी थी उसे कौन डकार गया? उसे कोई गैर मुस्लिम तो नहीं डकार गया ना! फिर बात करते हैं कि हमारा कोई, हमारे लिए कोई खड़ा होने वाला नहीं है. क्या कुछ नहीं कर सकते थे आप, क्या कुछ नहीं कर सकते थे, लेकिन जब ख़ैरात की ज़मीन पर कोठियां बनाओगे, और उनपर अपने घर बनाओगे तो फिर क्या खुदा को मुंह दिखाओगे, और फिर क्या खुदा तुम्हारे लिए अच्छा करेगा. आप किसे गालियां दे रहे हैं? किसे गालियां दे रहे हैं आप लोग? उस कॉरपोरेट को गालियां दे रहे हैं, उन बिज़नेसमैन को गालियां दे रहे हैं, जिसे सिर्फ मुनाफा चाहिये, जिन्हें जर्नलिज़्म से कोई लेना-देना, जर्नलिज्म से उनका कोई मतलब नहीं. आप अपना मीडिया शुरू करो किसने रोका है आपको? कांग्रेस ने रोका है बीजेपी ने रोका है या किसी और पार्टी ने आपको रोका है? अगर बस की बात नहीं हैं तो फिर छोड़ो यार ये ​ज़्यादा फड़फड़ाना कि हमारे लिए मीडिया ये नहीं दिखाता, फिर ये सबकी जरूरत नहीं है जैसा वो दिखाऐंगे आपको देखना पड़ेगा, और देख भी रहे हैं, पढ़ भी रहे हैं, सुन भी रहे हैं. जैसा वो आपको पढ़वाएंगे न्यूज़ पेपर के माध्यम से आपको पढ़ना पड़ेगा जैसा आपको न्यूज़ चैनल के माध्यम से दिखाएंगे वो देखना पड़ेगा आपको. यार अब तो ये क़ाहिलपन छोड़ दो, दूसरों के ऊपर (inaudible) दोष देना ये सब छोड़ दो, ये देखो की दिक्क़त कहां है, उसका हल निकालने की कोशिश करो. ये टेक्नॉलोजी का दौर है, टैक्निकल बनो और टेक्निकल तरीके से अपनी लड़ाई लड़ने की कोशिश करो.”

A Google search with a phrase from the speech led us to a 2017 Facebook post by one Mohd Zuber Khan. The text of this post matches with the text of the audio clip that is viral on social media. For instance, Khan’s post says, ” देख रहा हूं, पढ़ रहा हूं कि कुछ लोग मीडिया को दलाल कह रहे हैं, और दलाल मीडिया मुर्दाबाद के नारे लगा रहे हैं। यक़ीनन ये सब मुसलमान कह रहे हैं। बेशक़ मीडिया में बेशूमार कमियां हैं, इस बात से भी कोई इंकार नहीं कर सकता!!!”, whereas the man in the the viral audio can be heard saying, “मैं देख रहा हूं और पढ़ भी रहा हूं कि कुछ लोग मीडिया को दलाल कह रहे हैं. कुछ मीडिया मुर्दाबाद के नारे लगा रहे हैं. यक़ीनन ये सब मुसलमान ही ज्यादातर कह रहे हैं और बेशक़ मीडिया में बेशूमार हमारे यहाँ की कमियां भी हैं, इस बात से भी कोई इनकार नहीं किया जा सकता है”.

We reached out to Zuber Khan regarding the viral audio clip. In a conversation with Alt News, he said, “I wrote this post in 2017 and I am a journalist myself and I am associated with a news channel. I have studied at Jamia University. I felt bad when a friend called and asked me if I have copy-pasted the content. When I wrote it back [in 2017], the post had gone viral on Facebook and WhatsApp.” He further informed that he had reposted the same text in April 2020 with some changes. Posted below is the Facebook post from April 2020.

On May 27, he also took to Facebook and clarified that it was originally his post that is now being circulated as Ravish Kumar’s message for the Muslim community. He said that he has heard the viral clip and it’s not Ravish Kumar’s voice. “On one hand you steal content and then initiate a campaign to discredit a reputable and responsible journalist,” Khan opined.

Furthermore, Alt News contacted journalist Ravish Kumar for his comments on the viral audio attributed to him. He denied ever recording the clip and sent us a recording in his own voice. In the audio clip posted below, you can listen to Kumar delivering the first few lines of the viral text. The difference between the two voices is quite evident.

Therefore, an audio clip based on a Facebook post originally written by journalist Zuber Khan in 2017 was falsely attributed to journalist Ravish Kumar. The clip was passed off as a message from Kumar to the Muslim community.
